A prospective study of living kidney donors: 6 years follow-up from a cardiovascular disease risk perspective

Abstract: OBJECTIVE:The purpose of this prospective study was to evaluate the clinical, laboratory, and donation-specific outcomes of living kidney donors 6 years after donation. METHODS: We included a total of 93 kidney donors and 54 age-and sex-matched individuals as control group through a type 2 cohort consecutive recruitment. We detected kidney function abnormalities and the presence of hypertension, diabetes, and cardiovascular events during the 6 years follow-up period. RESULTS: The mean serum creatinine levels w… Show more

“…Tanto o grupo com compensação renal adequada quanto o grupo que não atingiu essa faixa não chegaram a níveis de albuminúria que traduzissem doença renal. Pacientes com maior relação albumina/creatinina ou proteína/ creatinina na urina apresentam maiores riscos de desenvolver doença renal terminal de acordo com calculadoras de risco desenvolvidas para a população norte-americana 31,32 .…”

“…Both the group with adequate renal compensation and the group that failed to reach this standard did not attain levels of albuminuria that might indicate kidney disease. Patients with a higher albumin/creatinine or protein/creatinine ratio in urine are at greater risk of developing end-stage renal disease, according to risk calculators developed for the North American population 31 , 32 .…”

“…In contrast, Mese et al [24] documented a higher rate of new-onset diabetes mellitus (0.0 vs. 4.3%), hypertension (6.4 vs. 32.9%), chronic kidney disease (0.0 vs. 2.1%), and CVD (0.0 vs. 2.1%) in LKT donors within 6 years after donation, compared to age-matched healthy individuals ( p < 0.001, respectively). Sayin et al evaluated the posttransplant new development of comorbidities in 607 LKT donors, which included newly diagnosed diabetes in 24 donors (3.9%), hypertension in 64 (10.5%), and atherosclerotic CVD in 48 (8.8%).…”
