Abstract: To simulate the progressive failure of pinned joint in quasi-isotropic [0/45/-45/90]s glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) composite laminates used in pipeline, 3-D finite element model is employed in the present work. Hashin failure criterion as a progressive damage model associated with Virtual-CrackClosing-Technique (VCCT) delamination model has been adopted to predicate the failure due to fiber breakage, matrix cracking and delamination in composite pinned joint. This technique may be an innovation for th… Show more

“…"Dog-bone" specimens were prepared to determine axial tensile strength and modulus of elasticity. The results are then compared to properties expected for a pipe of this construction (which extracted from the present numerical results of virgin properties of the constituent materials 32,33 ) to determine if any significant degradation has occurred over 30 years and to what degree. Figure 4 shows the cutting orientation and specimen dimensions.…”

“…Variables, such as hardness, or roughness or local plastic deformation, might be emerged and cause a reduction in the stiffness of the connections. This undesirable variation is a result of considering compressive strength, in the assembly material, which is almost equivalent to 90% of the yield stress of the plate material (Abd-Elhady et al, 2018). However, e / D values kept performing without any trends.…”

“…Some of the investigations highlighted the effect of assembly combination, either single laps (Hoang et al, 2013; Sallam et al, 2011) or double laps (El-Sisi et al, 2018; Esmaeili et al, 2014). The experimental works as well as the finite element method (FEM) numerical techniques were used to give the research more credibility (Abd-Elhady et al, 2018; Abd-Elhady and Sallam, 2015; Sallam et al, 2013). These investigations had led to the conclusion that the improvement of fatigue life can be obtained by increasing the tightening torque.…”
