Crashworthiness Optimization of Nested and Concentric Circular Tubes Using Response Surface Methodology and Genetic Algorithm

Abstract: In this study crashworthiness optimization of nested and concentric circular tubes under impact loading is performed by coupling Finite Element model, Response Surface Models and Genetic Algorithm. Specific Energy Absorption SEA and Crash Force Efficiency CFE are used in crashworthiness optimization since these criteria are important indicators for evaluating crashworthiness performance. Length and thickness of three concentric tubes as well as radius of one tube are adopted as design variables which are effec… Show more

“…For this purpose, geometrical modifications on tubes, various cross section types and material types have been examined to obtain better designs. For example, Usta et al (2015Usta et al ( , 2017Usta et al ( and 2018) studied on stepped and concentric circular crash tubes under axial impact loading by using numerical, experimental and optimization techniques. Eyvazian et al (2014) investigated the effects of corrugations on the deformation behavior, energy absorption, and failure mode of circular aluminum tube and show that corrugated tubes provided higher crashworthiness characteristics.…”

“…Physical crash test data are used to fit the curves and determine piecewise linear spring deformation and damper characteristics. Usta et al [77] used a genetic algorithm and RSM to design crashworthy concentric circular tubes which crush on impact absorbing the impact energy (Figure 6).…”
