Numerical Simulation for the Collision Between Side Structure and Level Ice in Event of Side Impact Scenario

Abstract: With the opening of the Northern Sea for international shipping routes, various vessels prefer to use this option to reach Europe as distance is significantly reduced if a ship is sailing through this route. In the same time, the demand to ensure ship safety rises as impact phenomenon between ship structures and ice causes numerous casualties. This work presented a numerical study with a concentration on contact between ship structures and levels. The double side skin of a chemical tanker was modelled with a s… Show more

“…To expand our observations on this factor, the 10-kts collision is included for comparison. The internal energy represents the capability of the structure to resist penetration perpendicular to the experienced stress/force (Bae et al, 2016a, b;Prabowo et al, 2016a, b;2017a-d). Therefore, the magnitude of the internal energy is used to assess the safety condition of the structures against side collision loads.…”

“…If the outer shell of the struck ship resists the penetration of the striking ship without the inner shell rupturing, damage to passenger cargo can be minimized in a Ro-Ro passenger ship and oil spillage and flooding can be avoided in a tanker carrier. This concept has been applied in several pioneering studies, namely those of Lützen (2001), Bae et al (2016a, b), and Prabowo (2016a, b). Furthermore, the influence of the external dynamics on ship safety following a collision accident is very significant.…”

“…This method is judged powerful enough to predict nonlinear phenomenon which is complicated, such as collision [15][16][17][18] and grounding [19]. By this method all design of involved objects' components can be defined in both structural and material levels.…”

“…The second form can occur in accidental situations, such as ship grounding. The indenter may be ship [4] and ice [5] for collision. In grounding, an indenter is defined into several topologies to simplify calculation and analysis [6] and may be denoted as obstruction.…”
