Crack Detection Using Mixed Axial and Bending Natural Frequencies in Metallic Euler-Bernoulli Beam

Abstract: For many years, several crack detection attempts have been using measurements of the structure's modal parameters. One of the easiest is to measure and correlate the change in natural frequencies to cracks. The direct and inverse problem have been discussed in literature. However, the inverse problem, being addressed in this paper, is a challenging one, where it starts by measuring certain structural properties and estimate the corresponding crack location and size. Unlike previous studies that utilizing natur… Show more

“…These advancements have served as a catalyst for the emergence and adoption of diverse SHM approaches and methodologies, spanning from conventional methods like visual inspection and manual monitoring to cutting-edge techniques that leverage advanced sensors, wireless communication, and machine learning algorithms. These advancements have not only widened the scope and applicability of SHM but have also presented novel prospects and complexities for researchers and practitioners in the field (Mostafa and Tawfik, 2016;Nguyen et al, 2021;Ngoc Long Nguyen et al, 2023;Tran-Ngoc et al, 2020a).…”

“…A literature review demonstrates that crack detection methods based on natural frequency changes are mostly focused on the bending mode vibration (Benedetti et al, 2018; Elshamy et al, 2018; Rubio et al, 2016; Zhang and Yan, 2017). Mostafa and Tawfik (2016) have investigated the accuracy of a crack detection method by considering different combinations of axial and bending frequencies. Because the coupled bending-torsional vibration (CBTV) has wide application in the engineering structures such as aircraft wings, high aspect ratio blades of turbine, helicopter and propeller and also unsymmetrical composite structures, in this article, the CBTV is considered.…”

“…Research studies investigating the cracked structures under CBTV can be classified into two categories. Firstly, the research studies that follow a forward problem attempt to relate known damage properties to changes in some system parameters (Mostafa and Tawfik, 2016). In other words, the crack features are known and generally, researchers aim to investigate the effect of crack on the natural frequencies and mode shapes.…”
