Abstract: The growing demand for quality of papaya by the domestic and international markets requires the development of genotypes that are capable of incorporating traits, such as high yield and fruit quality. This study estimated the genetic parameters and the specific combining ability of F 4 papaya lines crossed to the SS-72/12 tester to identify genotypes with higher genetic value for hybrid production. We evaluated 169 treatments consisting of 62 topcross hybrid combinations, 97 F 5 lines, and 10 controls in a 13 … Show more

“…(2015), where the formed group indicated the genetic distance between parents UC JS‐12, UC 72‐12, and UC Sekati, used in the crosses of half‐sib families. The genitor UC −72/12, one of those used to make half‐sib families, has specific combining ability for agronomic traits; thus, the progenies have the potential to be superior cultivars (Vettorazzi et al., 2021)…”

“…The genealogy of hermaphrodite parents can be observed in the study of Vivas et al (2015), where the formed group indicated the genetic distance between parents UC JS-12, UC 72-12, and UC Sekati, used in the crosses of half-sib families. The genitor UC −72/12, one of those used to make half-sib families, has specific combining ability for agronomic traits; thus, the progenies have the potential to be superior cultivars (Vettorazzi et al, 2021) Principal component analysis (Figure 6) shows a good visualization of dispersion on resistance traits related to papaya black spot. The half-sib families show resistance and variability within and between families.…”

“…There are many publications that reported the results of evaluation of gene action and combining ability in very different crops. For example in rice (Ambikabathy et al, 2021;Del Águila & da Silva, 2021;Gaballah et al, 2022), maize (Yu et al, 2020;Coelho, 2021;Sabitha et al, 2021), sweet corn (Khan et al, 2020), cowpea (Owusu et al, 2020), papaya (Vettorazzi et al, 2021), cotton (Giri et al, 2021;Mudhalvan et al, 2021), eggplants (Datta et al, 2021), groundnut (Daudi et al, 2021), common bean (Nkhata et al, 2021).…”

“…(2009) reported that the hermaphrodite papaya tree is cleistogamous, and its preferred mode of reproduction is through facultative self‐pollination. Thus, papaya breeding programs have sought to explore heterotic effects in obtaining hybrids via diallel or topcross designs (Miranda et al., 2021; Santa‐Catarina et al., 2019; Vettorazzi et al., 2021; Vivas et al., 2011; Vivas et al., 2013) and the exploration of inbreeding via generation advancement (Cortes et al., 2019; Santana et al., 2021). Consequently, the main papaya breeding program in Brazil, UENF/Caliman, has been looking for ways to provide superior genotypes that have a high fruit yield, disease resistance, and fruits with high firmness and soluble solids content (SSC) for genotypes of the Solo and Formosa group and intermediate cultivars to both groups (Pereira et al., 2019).…”
