Abstract: The slow rate of multiplication is one of the main constraints on the production of cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz). This work aimed to evaluate the use of leaf buds for rapid propagation of cassava varieties. Leaf buds were excised from three cassava varieties (BRS Kiriris, 98150-06 and 9624-09) for plantlet generation. The experiment was completely randomized with a 5 (age of mother plant) × 3 (position of the leaf buds on the stems) × 2 (agrochemical treatments) factorial design. Data were collected on l… Show more

“…The modifications tested at the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) made the method more efficient and less expensive (Toro et al, 1982). Recently using the leaf bud technique for rapid propagation of cassava it would be possible to reach an annual multiplication rate of 1:72 over the traditional methods using mature stem cuttings from 12-month-old plants (around 1:5) (Neves et al, 2020).…”

“…The very high need for cassava requires the provision of large amounts of seeds to support the productivity of the cassava agro-industry. Slow propagation is one of the obstacles in cassava production (Neves et al, 2020).…”

“…Several studies regarding the use of cassava cuttings made use of shoot cuttings with different book sections (Neves et al, 2020) and regular cuttings with different lengths, namely 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 cm (Remison et al, 2015). Experiments using mini-cassava cuttings with different treatment of the number of books (1, 2 and 3 books) and treatment using or without naphthalene acetic acid showed the percentage of sprouted cuttings was 95-100% (Ardian, 2012;NurulNahar & Tan, 2012).…”
