Abstract: Objective:To investigate the use of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) electrospun fiber mats containing different amounts of polyethylene oxide (PEO) as a doxycycline delivery system and to test antibacterial activity against an oral pathogen.Methodology:PMMA powders or PEO (mol wt 200 Kd) (10,20,30% w/w/) were dissolved in N, N-dimethylformamide (DMF) to obtain a final polymer concentration of 15% in DMF (w/v). 2% Doxycycline monohydrate was added to the solutions and submitted to vortex mixing. The solution was… Show more

“…The results show that the weight loss (%) of the PMMA-PHP NFs decreases over 2 days, compared to that of PMMA due to the release of PHP, particularly in the rst 12 hours. These results are in accordance with those obtained by Carvalho et al,45 who demonstrated that PMMA is a waterinsoluble polymer and its degradation could be increased by the addition of different ratios of PEO (10, 20, and 30%) owing to its high solubility in water. The current ndings proved that the degradation of the PMMA scaffold was affected the composition of different concentrations of the PHP complex.…”

“…Meanwhile, the incorporation of PHP into the PMMA solution might create a clear porous interconnected scaffold, which improves the mechanical stability of the nanobrous mats and in turn facilitates cell adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation. 45 who demonstrated that PMMA is a waterinsoluble polymer and its degradation could be increased by the addition of different ratios of PEO (10, 20, and 30%) owing to its high solubility in water. “…Nanofibers are currently being explored for drug delivery of various active molecules. 44 Several biomolecules, proteins and antimicrobial molecules such as tetracycline, ciprofloxacin, metronidazole are being incorporated into nanofibers. The nanofibers are considered a good option for antimicrobial drug delivery systems and guide the formation of periodontal tissues.…”

“…Poly(ethylene glycol) is used to plasticize PMMA [ 21 , 22 , 23 , 24 , 25 , 26 ] because it combines high biocompatibility and good retention properties. However, its compatibility with PMMA is limited [ 7 , 27 ], which limits its usability and the range of available properties of the resulting materials as plasticizer should not form a separate phase.…”
