“…Considering the distribution of C. combaymensis and P. testaceus , L. stratiophaga could have a wider distribution. Casearia combaymensis occurs in several localities in the Brazilian Amazon rainforest and also in Bolivia, Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, Ecuador and Peru (Marquete & Mansano 2016); this distribution, combined with the widespread distribution of P. testaceus in the Neotropical Region (Fachin et al 2017), reflects the potential distribution of specimens of L. stratiophaga .…”

“…The soldier fly genus Ptecticus Loew (Diptera: Stratiomyidae) includes about 140 described species distributed worldwide, except Antarctica, but only 17 species are recorded from Brazil (Fachin 2022; Hauser et al 2017). Among the Neotropical species, P. testaceus (Fabricius) is one of the most common and widely distributed, occurring from Mexico to Argentina (Fachin et al 2017). Immatures of this species feed on a wide variety of decaying fruit and plants, such as oranges, lemons, cacti, mangoes and cannonball fruit (Cordero‐Jenkins et al 1990; Lindner 1928; Pujol‐Luz & Leite 2001).…”

“…They are popularly known as wood flies, and most adults are dark brown to reddish or black in color, with longitudinal stripes in the mesonotum (Figures 1, 2, 3 and 4) [1,2]. They are distinct from other basal brachycerans by having large pulvilliform empodia, absence of spurs on the anterior and posterior tibias, and the presence of a distinct tuft of bristles below or close to the posterior spiracle (Figure 5) [3,4,5]. The wings are hyaline, with spots of varied patterns, yellow or brown.…”
