Abstract: We present new karyotype records for six Proechimys species from the Brazilian Amazon. P. echinothrix from the region of Purus River had 2n = 32 chromosomes and a FN = 58, while P. cuvieri from the region of the Japurá River presented 2n = 28 and FN = 46. All individuals presented hybridization with an 18S rDNA probe in a single chromosome pair, with the exception of P. cuvieri from the Japurá region, which presented a third signal in one of the homologs of pair 1. No ITS were found in any of the individuals. … Show more

“…stimulax constitutes a species complex or a single species with karyotypic variants. Different karyotypes in morphologically indistinguishable species (cryptic species) are quite frequent in rodents, as previously described for Proechimys (Eler et al., 2020; Rodrigues da Costa et al., 2016), Neacomys (Oliveira da Silva et al., 2017, 2019), and Oecomys (Malcher et al., 2017). Morphological and molecular studies in specimens of M .…”

“…The existence of two different cytotypes for M. stimulax (FN = 116 mentioned by Patton et al, 2000; FN = 110 here described) collected from different locations (Figure 1) led us to question whether M. stimulax constitutes a species complex or a single species with karyotypic variants. Different karyotypes in morphologically indistinguishable species (cryptic species) are quite frequent in rodents, as previously described for Proechimys (Eler et al, 2020;Rodrigues da Costa et al, 2016), Neacomys (Oliveira da , and…”

“…Caviomorph rodents were the first to occupy the South American continent. Throughout its evolutionary history, it has undergone successive dispersion processes forming several taxa, with the Echimyidae family being considered the most diverse family of the infraorder Hystricognathi, occupying several ecological niches, distributed in different Neotropical regions with several species acting as a helminth host and reservoir of zoonosis (Patterson and Wood, 1982;Huchon and Douzery, 2001;Fabre et al, 2016;Eler et al, 2020).…”

“…Proechimys is a speciose and chromosomally variable Neotropical rodent. The taxonomic identification of Proechimys species is problematic due in part to inter-and intraspecific morphological overlaps, with many species presenting subtle variations in their characteristic morphological traits (Patton et al, 2000;Eler et al, 2020). Cytogenetic studies have shown great chromosomal variability in this group of rodents, with diploid numbers ranging from 14 to 62, and FN (number of autosome arms) ranging from 18 to 80.…”

“…Intraspecific karyotype diversity in sympatry has also been reported, making it difficult to understand the relationships among species (Weksler et al, 2001;Eler et al, 2012;Amaral et al, 2013). Eler et al (2020) presented new karyotypes for Proechimys and expanded the geographical distribution of some cytotypes, attesting to the great karyological diversity of this genus. Given this scenario, the current study seeks to investigate the role of TEs in the karyotypic evolution of Proechimys.…”
