Abstract: The genetic background of the Brazilian population is mainly characterized by three parental populations: European, African, and Native American. The aim of this study was to overview the genetic ancestry estimates for different Brazilian geographic regions and analyze factors involved in these estimates. In this systematic scoping review were included 51 studies, comprehending 81 populations of 19 states from five regions of Brazil. To reduce the potential of bias from studies with different sampling methods,… Show more

“…A previous study carried out in Brazil between 2014 and 2016, in Rio Grande do Sul state, Southern region, also found a higher incidence of dengue cases in individuals aged 21-40 years old [52]. The similarity between these findings is interesting, especially considering that the studies were conducted in different years and in regions located at the extremes of Brazil, which have considerable climatic, cultural and genetic differences [53].…”

“…Our study was unable to explore the effects of Native American ancestry, which reaches 20% in Northern Brazil (39,68). While a study of induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) banks in the USA showed similar match rates for Caucasians and Native Americans (48% and 46%, likely due to their low genetic diversities) (69), this remains to be explored in Brazil.…”

“…Comparing our frequencies with frequencies reported in other continents, the Latin American frequencies are more similar to those reported in Caucasian population [ 62 , 66 68 ], while S allele has been greater in Asian population [ 69 , 70 ] and L allele greater in African population [ 70 , 71 ]. Nevertheless, none of Latin American studies had a strict genetic control for population substructure between cases and controls and according to previous reports the Brazilian population should have an over-representation of African component in some regions [ 72 74 ]. Even though Latin America presents a diverse population substructure, most of the regions presented in the meta-analysis are likely to have an elevated Caucasian component compared to native American and African backgrounds [ 70 , 75 , 76 ]; however, slight differences may not be discarded in some small or separate regions according to demographic history of these admixed countries [ 72 76 ].…”
