Abstract: Oxidative stress (OS) plays an important role in atherogenesis and since glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) provide protection against OS, we have tested the hypothesis that deletion polymorphisms in two GSTs (GSTM1 and GSTT1) may affect the risk of developing atherosclerosis. A total of 382 individuals (200 patients with atherosclerosis and 182 healthy controls) were included in this association study. Genomic DNA was isolated from peripheral blood cells or from buccal epithelial cells and genotyping was perfo… Show more

“…GST are an important family of antioxidant enzymes, and GSTM1 and/or GSTT1 deletion polymorphisms have previously been associated with a variety of diseases related to oxidative stress, such as diabetes, atherosclerosis, coronary heart disease, and hypertension, which is in line with our findings.…”

“…Such an antilipoperoxidant might be particularly impactful for patients deficient in antilipoperoxidant proteins such as GSTs known to possess an increased risk for atherosclerosis. 4,5 Deficiencies in these same protein antilipoperoxidants have also been associated with increased risk for asthma 6 and Alzheimer’s disease. 7…”

“…Deleting genes of GST could decrease detoxification of harmful electrophiles associated with GST activity and DNA stability, which results in susceptibility to various diseases ( 22 24 ). There are contradictory results in the studies on the effect of GSTs polymorphism on Atherosclerosis due to demographic diversity of the studied population ( 34 ). GSTs cellular detoxification activities involve in inflammatory processes, cellular differentiation and signaling pathways ( 35 37 ).…”
