Antioxidant Effects of Biochanin A in Streptozotocin Induced Diabetic Rats

Abstract: Bioflavonoid-containing diets have been reported to be beneficial in diabetes. In the current study, the effect of Fasting blood glucose (FBG), Triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), very low density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDL-C) and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels significantly increased and body weight, high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activity and total antioxidant status (TAS) significantly decreased… Show more

“…A previous study indicated that SOD was inactivated by glycation (61). Another study reported that SOD activity was decreased in STZ-induced rat models of DM (62). An injection with STZ was reported to increase MDA levels and decrease the activity of SOD in rats with DM (63,64).…”

“…Similar findings were observed by many experimental DM investigations. 13 , 14 , 44 , 46 , 47 , 60 , 61 Hypoproteinemia and hypoalbuminemia are linked with liver and kidney dysfunctions. Albumin is produced by the liver.…”

“…Streptozotocin (Sigma-Aldrich) was dissolved in citrate buffer, pH 4.5 (0.1 mol/l trisodium citrate, 0.1 mol/l citric acid) and used to induce diabetes mellitus (55 mg/kg BW) in rats [27]. Diabetes was confirmed by measuring of blood glucose levels three days after the STZ injection.…”
