Phenolic Content and Biomolecule Oxidation Protective Activity of Globularia alypum Extracts

Abstract: The protective activity of methanolic (Met E) and aqueous (Aq E) extracts of Globularia alypum L. (G. alypum) against DNA, lipid and protein oxidative damage was investigated. Moreover, the scavenging, chelating, and reducing power activities of the extracts were also evaluated. Phytochemical analysis was performed to determine phenolic compounds. Results showed that Met E and Aq E were rich in phenolic compounds, and were able to scavenge DPPH˙ with IC50 values of 48.61 µg/mL and 51.97 µg/mL, respectively. In… Show more

“…Significant quantity of catechin, epicatechin and proanthocyanidins have been found in A. Thaliana nuclei and also, in carrot juice concentrate [ 80 , 83 ]. The possible capacity of phenolic compounds to protect DNA against oxidative stress via radical scavenging activity have been reported by Bouriche et al [ 84 ].…”

“…Phenolics are known to have remarkable antioxidant capabilities. The chemical structures of phenolic compounds are predictive of their antioxidant potentials, which circulate around radical scavenging, hydrogen-or electron-donation, and metal chelating capabilities [94,95]. In response to salt stress, phenolics act as direct ROS scavengers by donating a hydrogen atom to neutralise free radicals, as well as through a single-electron transfer.…”

“…This result confirms data from the literature that antioxidant activity is directly correlated with phenol content. [12] Phenolic compounds are capable of intercepting the free radical oxidation chain through the hydrogen donation of their phenolic hydroxyls [13][14] The confirmation of the antioxidant activity in these extracts can contribute to validate the medicinal use of the evaluated species, since the use as remedy of the products of these herbs are part of the habits of many communities. The chemical composition of Ageratum conyzoides has not been yet accurately established.…”
