Antifungal Potential of Indigenous Medicinal Plants against Myrothecium Leaf Spot of Bitter Gourd ( Momordica charantia L.)

Abstract: Bitter gourd is of great importance due to its usage against the treatment of numerous ailments in human beings. A comprehensive survey at four localities of Southern Punjab, Pakistan was carried out to determine the severity of Myrothecium leaf spot. Maximum disease severity was at C1 (Chak 11/NP) and least at C2 (Kot Mehtab). Among isolated species Myrothecium roridum was found more prevalent and pathogenic as compared to M. verrucaria. Antifungal activity using solvent extracts of five medicinal plants (Man… Show more

“…5 M. Charantia is a plant belonging to the Cucurbitaceae family and is widely distributed in tropical and subtropical areas around the world. [5][6][7] Studies have determined that this plant contains a great diversity of primary and secondary metabolites 8,9 with therapeutic potential as antiulcer properties 6,10 , antioxidant [11][12][13][14] , antimicrobial 6,8,12,[15][16][17] , anthelmintic 18,19 , antidiabetic 6,11,20,21 , antiinflammatory 21,22 , antihyperglycemic 6,21,23 and anticancer 4,19,21,24 , and nutritional as antilipolytic. 11,25 Bacterial resistance is one of the main problems around the world, it is thought that by 2050 bacterial resistance will be one of the leading causes of death in the world.…”

“…The collected leaves were washed with tap water shade dried and then homogenized into fine powder. Plant extracts were prepared according to the method suggested by Abid et al (2017) with slight modification. Powdered material (10 g) was extracted with 100 ml absolute methanol solvent for 48 hours in Soxhlet apparatus.…”

“…Research on alternative, ecoofriendly, and economically acceptable control strategies are urgently needed to avoid the adverse effects of agrochemicals used in chemical control. One such alternative strategy is the use of secondary metabolites from plant as biorational tools for pest and disease management to promote sustainable and healthy production of crops 4,5,6,7 . Among secondary metabolites involved in the plant defense against fungal pathogens are the plant alkaloids 4.…”
