Occurrence of Aviadenovirus in chickens from the poultry industry of Minas Gerais

Abstract: The occurrence of Aviadenovirus (FAdV) was investigated in chickens from the poultry industry of Minas Gerais state, Brazil. The investigation was conducted due to the scarcity of recent data in the country and its description in neighboring countries. For this purpose, livers were collected from layer chicks (n=25), older layers (n=25), broilers (n=300), and livers (n=25) and stool (n=25) samples from broiler breeders, representing the major poultry regions of the state. FAdV DNA was demonstrated using a prev… Show more

“…Serological detections have been reported in Cuba, Guyana and Trinidad & Tobago and molecular detection of the virus has been reported in the Dominica Republic (Brown Jordan, Gongora, Hartley, & Oura, 2018;Brown Jordan, Sookhoo, et al, 2018;Schachner, Marek, Grafl, & Hess, 2016). There have however been a number of reports of FAdV being present and causing disease in poultry from the nearby territories of Latin America, including the presence of FAdV-4 (Hafez, 2011;Liu et al, 2016;Mazaheri et al, 1998;Pereira et al, 2014;Rodríguez, Koga, Alvarado, & Tinoco, 2014;Toro et al, 1999). A recent publication on the molecular characterization of disease causing FAdV strains from Brazil revealed the presence of FAdV-8a, FAdV-8b and FAdV-11 (De la Torre, Nunez, Parra, Astolfi-Ferreira, & Ferreira, 2018).…”

“…Chicken is a major animal production industry in Brazil and worldwide, and the potential cross transference of pathogens exists. In addition, free-range poultry is commonplace in Brazil and elsewhere, and known to harbor relevant pathogens, such as viruses [ 27 , 28 ]. On the tree, at the precursor branches, the strains ev-C11 (DQ500007) of South Korea, described in 2008, CR-1986 (GU002400), described in 1986 in Costa Rica, and EAV-HP (AJ238125), described in 2005 in the UK, seemed to be related to a common ancestral to all strains in the tree, including Crax 1.…”

“…Globally, the circulation of FAdV is widespread, covering most geographical locations, and it appears to infect not only chickens but also various other avian species [ 3 ]. A feature of FAdV epidemiology is the unusually large number of serotypes that can be isolated on a single farm [ 4 ]. It is also common to isolate multiple FAdV serotypes from the same diseased bird, suggesting a lack of cross-protection among serotypes [ 3 ].…”

“…In Malaysia, FAdVs infections have been associated with sporadic IBH outbreaks in broiler farms, and those outbreaks are characterized by a rapid onset of mortality, peaking at days 3 - 5 post infection [ 4 ]. FAdV infections often result in a low degree of morbidity, but mortality rates typically range between 5% to 10%, although in severe cases, mortality may be as high as 30% [ 18 ].…”
