Electromyographic analysis of the gait cycle phases of boxer dogs

Abstract: Systematic studies involving technologies such as surface electromyography (sEMG) may provide important data that enable veterinarians to recognize musculoskeletal, ligamentous, and neurological alterations. The aim of this study was to describe the gait cycle phases and the timing of muscle activation in healthy Boxer dogs during gait by means of sEMG. The gait cycle of seven Boxer dogs was evaluated and sEMG was recorded from the biceps brachii, triceps brachii, brachiocephalic, rectus femoris, semitendinosu… Show more

“…These results were in concordance with those previously reported for walking cats [5] and dogs [2]. In quadrupedal mammals, the stance phase duration of the hind limbs has been commonly associated with propulsive force generation [24,25,27]. An increase in stance phase duration obtained in the present study in uphill movements might be consistent with the need to increase time for propulsion.…”

“…To a sampling frequency of 1500 Hz, a low pass Butterworth filter, with a cut-off frequency of 50 Hz was chosen to reduce the high-frequency noises while retaining the true information of the EMG signal. The sEMG has proven to be a valid method to give useful and valuable information of locomotion in equines [10,25,26] and dogs [16,19,24,27,28]. Determining the timing of excitation and magnitude of muscle activation can provide an accurate picture of the function of muscles during movement [27].…”

“…biceps brachii is involved in the extension of the shoulder in addition to its stabilizing function. In 2016, Araújo, et al [ 23 ] evaluated the contributions of the thoracic limb muscles of boxer dogs and concluded that the m . biceps brachii , the m .…”

“…For the diagnosis of neuromuscular diseases, electromyography may also be used in addition to walking analysis methods. With this method, assessments may be performed by combining the activities and kinetic and kinematic data of muscles during motion [11,12]. Walking plates, another example of walking analysis systems, are used with animals and plantar force values are obtained.…”
