In recent years there has been an increasing trend in research of sheep and goat udder morphology, not only from the view of its suitability for machine milking, but also in terms of milk yield and mammary gland health. More precisely, herds consisting of high-yielding sheep and goats as a result of long-term and one-sided selection to increase milk yield, have been characterised by distortion of the udder morphology caused by increasing the pressure of udder weight on its suspensory system. Along with the deteriorated milking traits, which is negatively reflected on the udder health, some udder morphology traits are often emphasized as factor of production longevity of dairy sheep and goats. Since the intention of farmers and breeders nowadays is to increase the milk yield of sheep and goats while maintaining desirable udder morphology and udder health, the aim of this paper is to give a detailed overview of the current knowledge about the relationship of morphological udder traits with milk yield, and the health of the mammary gland of sheep and goats. External measures of udder size (circumference, width and depth of the udder) are strongly correlated with milk production in sheep and goats. The morphological udder traits determining its suitability for machine milking (such as teat position and teat angle, udder depth, teat size, cistern height) are related to the mammary gland health in sheep and goats. Thus, the incidence of mastitis is noticeably higher in the udders of unsuitable shape for machine milking (deep and hung udders, unfavourable position of teats, etc.). Consequently, the morphological udder traits that affect the milkability of sheep and goats are indirectly related to milk yield.

The external morphological traits of the mammary gland, and their relationships with somatic cell count (SCC) and the presence of intramammary infection (IMI), were studied in 30 Serrana goats, Transmontano ecotype. Globular-shaped udders were the most predominant, with slightly separated and symmetrical halves, presenting some degree of suspension. Funnel-shaped teats were the most prevalent shape with an opening of 120° to 160° degrees. Significant differences were observed between healthy group and the coagulase negative staphylococci (CNS)-infected group for udder cleft, teat perimeter and distance between teats parameters; and between healthy group and CNS or Staphylococcus aureus groups for degree of separation, teat shape and udder shape (p < 0.05). The udder shape, symmetry, degree of suspension and degree of separation parameters showed to be different depending on SCC (p < 0.05). The udder perimeter and udder depth traits showed differences between the lowest and the middle SCC group. We concluded that bifurcated pendular udders, with vertical loose teats and located close to each other, are more likely to have IMI, and have the highest SCC. The inclusion in breeding programs of certain mammary conformation traits would not only help to improve milk production, but would also decrease the susceptibility to IMI of the herd.

Bu çalışmanın amacı Kilis keçilerinin meme tiplerinin somatik hücre sayısı (SHS) üzerine olası etkilerini araştırmaktır. Çalışma, Türkiye’nin Güneydoğu Anadolu Bölgesinde yer alan Gaziantep ilinde özel bir Kilis keçi işletmesinde yürütülmüştür. İşletmede 100 baş keçinin 2020 yılında alınan verileri değerlendirilmiştir. Keçilere ait meme özelliklerinin belirlemesi laktasyonun ortasında akşam sağımı sırasında yapılmıştır. Keçilerde somatik hücre sayısı (SHS)’nın tespiti ise oğlakların sütten kesimi sonrasında ardışık olarak 3 kez yapılmıştır. Verilerin istatistiksel olarak varyans analizleri ve çoklu karşılaştırma testleri SAS paket programı ile yapılmıştır. Yapılan değerlendirmede; genel olarak ortalama SHS ve Log10SHS sayıları sırasıyla 937.000±67.190 hücre/ml ve 5.803±0.501 hücre/ml olarak belirlenmiştir. Süt kalitesinin belirlenmesinde kullanılan geometrik SHS değeri ise ortalama 932.321 hücre/ml olarak tespit edilmiştir. Keçilerde asimetrik meme tipine rastlanmamış olup, tespit edilen düz meme, kırık meme ve iki parçalı meme tipleri için ortalama SHS ve Log10SHS sayıları sırasıyla 1.048.800±119.060 hücre/ml, 793.300±212.990 hücre/ml ve 900.100±88.440 hücre/ml ve 5.836±0.523, 5.796±0.315 ve 5.787±0.524 hücre/ml olarak tespit edilmiştir. Keçi meme özellikleri oranları düz meme, kırık meme ve iki parçalı meme tipi için sırasıyla %32.0, %10.0 ve %58 olarak belirlenmiştir. Sonuç olarak; Kilis keçilerinden elde edilen sütlerin ve dolaylı olaraktan süt ürünlerinin halk sağlığı ve insan beslenmesinde güvenle kullanılabileceği ve Kilis keçilerinin süt üretiminde başarılı bir şekilde yetiştirildiği kanaatine varılmıştır. Bununla birlikte tüm dünyada keçi ırkları için süt kalite standartlarının geliştirilmesi ve belirlenmesine acilen ihtiyaç olduğu düşünülmektedir.
