Supplementation of Curcuma longa hydrolate improves immunomodulatory response in Nile tilapia reared in a recirculation aquaculture system

Abstract: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of dietary supplementation with different doses of Curcuma longa hydrolate on the hematological, immunological and zootechnical parameters of Nile tilapia cultivated in a recirculation system (RAS). Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) were used, distributed in 16 polyethylene boxes, divided into four treatments: 0.0%; 2.5%; 7.5% and 10.0% of Curcuma longa hydrolate, in quadruplicate. After 45 days of treatment, four fish per experimental unit were anesth… Show more

“…Silva et al (2021) recorded the antiparasitic effect of the same hydrolate used in our work against monogeneans for tilapia. Furthermore, the dietary addition of Curcuma longa hydrolate to Nile tilapia showed benefits in the intestinal microbial community and increased the number of circulating lymphophytes, leading to a better physiological performance of Nile tilapia by maintaining fish homeostasis in rearing conditions (Pereira et al, 2020;. This information corroborates our data, demonstrating the use of hydrolates as an important alternative to chemotherapy in aquaculture.…”

“…Lymphocytes and monocytes percentages significantly ( P > 0.05) increased; meanwhile neutrophils percentage significantly ( P > 0.05) decreased as C-NPs levels in diets increased (Table 4 ). Monocytes are referred to as macrophages and are responsible for the processing and presenting antigens to lymphocytes, linking the innate and adaptive immune system (Zachary et al 2018 ; Pereira et al 2020 ). The higher presence of circulating monocytes and lymphocytes in C-NPs-fed fish is associated with the improved immunomodulatory properties.…”

“…Similar results were observed by Sahu et al ( 2008 ) in Labeo rohita fed a diet supplemented with turmeric, C. longa. Pereira et al ( 2020 ) found that feeding Nile tilapia on diets with turmeric hydrolate resulted in a significant increase of monocytes and lymphocytes in relation to the control group.…”

“…The enhanced hematological indices emphasized the salutary role of curcumin nanoparticles and spirulina on the health of Nile tilapia with no anemic symptoms with promoted mechanism of erythropoiesis and hemosynthesis, indicating the positive link of curcumin to the metabolic functions and availability of nutrients in the blood of Nile tilapia (Ashra zadeh et al, 2020; Ashry et al, 2021;Fazio, 2019). Besides, increasing the percentages of neutrophils and monocytes in curcumin and Cu-NPs diets are associated with ameliorated properties of both innate and adaptive immune system of sh (Abdel-Tawwab et al, 2022; Moniruzzaman and Min, 2020; Pereira et al, 2020). Curcumin can probably activate the neutrophils and macrophages, to release reactive oxygen species (ROS) subsequent with increased the phagocytic activity, which is involved in immunity (Ashry et al, 2021;Jagetia and Aggarwal, 2007).…”
