Abstract: This is the first report of parasitism by Gongylonema sp. in a free-ranging callitrichid from the Atlantic forest of Espírito Santo, Brazil. A juvenile male of Geoffroy's marmoset (Callithrix geoffroyi) was euthanized due to poor prognosis, then necropsied. Samples of the tongue were collected for routine histological processing. Microscopically, there were transversal sections of adult nematodes within the epithelial layer of the mucosa of the tongue. Lingual scraping demonstrated a small number of oval embry… Show more

“…infects several species of mammals and birds (Levine, 1980). In Brazil it has already been found in non-human primates (Oliveira et al, 2019), rodents (Costa Cordeiro et al, 2018), opossums (Quintão e Silva and Costa, 1999), and humans (Waisberg et al, 2018). Human infection, although rare, occurs when intermediate hosts are ingested, in this case, especially beetles and cockroaches of the Blattella Caudell, 1903 genus, which hosts the L3 larva of the parasite.…”

“…Transmission to the definitive host occurs by direct or accidental ingestion of the intermediate hosts (Anderson 2000). Most records in mammals are in rodents and primates (Anderson 2000; da Costa Cordeiro et al 2018; Oliveira et al 2019); records in carnivores are rare (da Costa Cordeiro et al 2018). In Brazil, helminth fauna studies in recent years have not identified Gonglyonema spp.…”

“…Some studies performed with Gongylonema spp. in captive primates and herbivore mammals show the pathologic potential of these parasites (Chakraborty 1994; Oliveira et al 2019). The main factors associated with increased pathologic potential are anthropization of wild habitats, deforestation, and habitat fragmentation, because the prevalence of parasites tends to be higher in these habitats (Bordes et al 2015), possibly due to the increase in parasite transmission rates in a community with high host population densities.…”
