Improvement of semen parameters after coil embolization of varicoceles: a systematic review

Abstract: This systematic review was conducted in accordance with the 2009 Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement, including clinical studies in which one of the outcomes was semen parameter improvement after varicocele embolization using coils only. The objective of the review was to assess the evidence on the role of embolization using coils alone for semen parameter improvement in men with varicocele, since embolization using coils is the most cost-effective method of va… Show more

“…We took the opportunity of a 14 percutaneous embolization of varicocoele has been widely evolved and introduced in clinical practice, due to its minimally invasive nature and excellent clinical outcomes. 3,6,7,15 This procedure offers a rapid recov-ery and can be successfully accomplished in approximately 90% of attempts. 6 Various studies have demonstrated improvement in semen variables following embolization 15 ; moreover, percutaneous embolization is a viable treatment option for men suffering from orchalgia sec- and showed that at 39 months follow-up, 86.9% of patients had complete resolution of symptoms.…”

“…We took the opportunity of a local policy change in the strategy of embolization to address this aspect. Since the first description in 1978 by Lima et al., 14 percutaneous embolization of varicocoele has been widely evolved and introduced in clinical practice, due to its minimally invasive nature and excellent clinical outcomes 3,6,7,15 . This procedure offers a rapid recovery and can be successfully accomplished in approximately 90% of attempts 6 .…”

“…[10] Hypertonic glucose 75% is considered a safe sclerosing agent. [11,12] Complications include edema, short-term local urticaria (15 minutes), transient glycemic elevation in patients with insulin resistance, and short-term neurological alteration (2 hours) in patients with migraines and arrhythmias. [11] Still, it has a high solute concentration, promotes the disintegration of the cells of the endothelial layer, and causes destruction and disintegration of the venous layer, which has a sclerosing effect on the walls of blood vessels.…”
