Evaluation of hemosponge in promoting dental socket healing after 3rd mandibular premolar extraction in a feline model

Abstract: Aim: To investigate the healing process following use of collagen sponges in the dental socket after extraction. Wound complications during the study were also evaluated. Methods: 32 cats were included in this study. IV administration of the combination of diazepam (0.22 mg/kg) and ketamine (10 mg/kg) was used to induce general anesthesia. “…The collagen sponge adopted in this study, also used as a carrier by other research groups, exhibits expansion capacity in addition to allowing adequate soaking of the test solution. Consequently, the sponge adapts to the size of the defect, promotes the efficient tamponade of the lesion and favors the formation of a stable clot, being reabsorbed after four to six weeks . The material also has advantages for clinical application because it is accessible, inexpensive and easy to handle …”
