Abstract: Fish fauna assessments with traditional catch methods are undesired in marine reserves. Underwater visual census on the other hand is biased due to fish-diver interactions, such as shyness or avoidance behavior of large-bodied target species. This study presents the first marine ichthyofauna inventory of the Fernando de Noronha Archipelago, off northeastern Brazil, sampled with non-destructive, independent Baited Remote Underwater Video Systems (BRUVS). High fish species richness, totaling 66 species from 28 f… Show more

“…This is only a small fraction of the ichthyofauna of FNA that, with a total of 250 species and 77 families, harbours the greatest richness of marine sh among the oceanic islands of the South Atlantic 95,111 . Compared with other visual census techniques we observed a similar number of families (28-27 95,112,113 ) but much fewer species (50-66) 95,112,113 . Only, Soto (2001) 94 depicted much more families (68) and species (167) but his inventory that including pelagic species combined visual census, sheries surveys and literature records.…”

“…The difference between our and other studies is likely due to our extensive depth coverage compared with other that mostly focused on shallow (<20 m) waters. Only Schmid et al (2020) 113 observed a dominance of M. niger but their study was performed using baited remote underwater video stations and black trigger sh are voracious bold species 116 . Even if far form exhaustive, our video records likely provide a robust picture of the main pelagic and demersal species present in FNA and a robust information to complement and identify acoustic observations.…”

“…The survey allowed for the identification of teleost biodiversity; both reef fish and pelagic (open water) species were recovered. The metabarcoding approach confirmed the island as a biodiversity hotspot for jacks ( Seriola rivoliana; Elagatis bipinnulata; Caranx crysos; Caranx latus ) and parrotfishes ( Cryptotomus roseus Sparisoma chrysopterum Sparisoma axillare Sparisoma rubripinne ) (Mazzei et al, 2017; Schmid et al, 2020). Beyond that, the method captured molecular signatures from eels ( Gymnothorax vicinus ); sardines ( Harengula jaguana ); tunas ( Thunnus obesus ); wahoos ( Acanthocybium solandri ); sailfishes ( Istiophorus platypterus ); needlefishes ( Tylosurus crocodilus; Platybelone argalus ); and wrasses ( Xyrichtys novacula; Halichoeres radiatus; Doratonotus megalepis ).…”

“…Although elasmobranch metabarcoding appears quite established in literature (Dunn et al ., 2022; Fraija‐Fernández et al ., 2020; Ip et al ., 2021; Liu et al ., 2022; Mariani et al ., 2021; Marwayana et al ., 2021; Monuki et al ., 2021), the results of this study suggest that it is not mature enough to be applied in more challenging situations. For example, the authors expected that their protocol would detect at least a greater number of elasmobranch species than a recent baited remote underwater video stations (BRUVS) survey in the same area (5; Schmid et al ., 2020) and potentially increase the total number of known species ( i.e. , reduce the phantom diversity of sharks and rays; Ip et al ., 2021).…”

“…(5; Schmid et al, 2020) and potentially increase the total number of known species (i.e., reduce the phantom diversity of sharks and rays; Ip et al, 2021). The main constraint in capturing elasmobranch diversity in the Fernando de Noronha case study was the crossamplification of prokaryotic DNA by the Elas02 primer pair, representing a large waste of sequencing effort.…”
