Butterflies (Lepidoptera: Papilionoidea) from the campos rupestres of Serra de São José, Minas Gerais, Brazil

Abstract: We provide the first inventory of butterfly species (Lepidoptera: Papilionoidea) in Serra de São José, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Serra de São José has elevations ranging from 800 m to 1,400 m above sea level; the butterflies were sampled using traps and entomological nets in seven plots along the altitudinal gradient. We recorded 647 butterflies belonging to 112 species and six families. “…To evaluate flight‐related traits for this butterfly community, three criteria had to be met: (1) There had to be at least three individuals of each species to be selected for trait measurements; (2) All butterflies had to exhibit both left and right forewings undamaged to properly and precisely measure all three wing traits (length, width and area); and (3) All four flying traits had to be measured in all butterflies, including the thorax volume trait (thorax length × thorax width 2 ) and the three wing traits.
