Jaguarundi (Puma yagouaroundi) predation by puma (Puma concolor) in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest

Abstract: The jaguarundi (Puma yagouaroundi) is the second most widespread carnivore of the Americas, and considered a threatened species in Brazil. However, most of its ecology is unknown, and few information is available about species that may act as its predator. In this study we present evidence of the predation of a jaguarundi by puma (Puma concolor) in a protected area (Carlos Botelho State Park) in the state of São Paulo, southeastern Brazil. We collected fecal samples in trails and dirt roads in the study area, … Show more

“…However, due to the difficulty in identifying prey items to genus or species (Magezi 2013), most data were not included in category clustering. Thus, in order clustering, which includes Rodentia data, we argue that Leopardus pardalis occupies a more plausible place within small felids and rodent‐based species, such as Leopardus wiedii , Leopardus tigrinus and Puma yagouaroundi (Silva Pereira 2009, Magioli & Ferraz 2018).…”

“…Firstly, we underlined that the large cats, Puma concolor and Panthera onca were placed together. The especially high consumption of larger mammal prey and even other carnivores by these species is well known (Rueda et al 2013, Magioli & Ferraz 2018, 2021, Llanos & Travaini 2020). Some researchers relate this to the morphological capability of larger predators to feed on larger prey (Carbone et al 2007, Rueda et al 2013, Santos et al 2014, Perilli et al 2016).…”

“…médio porte, terrestres e arborícolas, entres outros grupos da fauna, como: aves, répteis e anfíbios. Geralmente, o animal é encontrado em reclusão (solitário), mas também pode estar em pequenas populações ou duplas (comumente, uma fêmea e seu filhote)(CHEIDA, et al, 2006; TOLEDO;SILVA, 2010;MAGIOLI;FERRAZ, 2018).A sua distribuição geográfica se dá nas Américas do Norte (ex. : México), Central (ex.…”
