Abstract: Bats have been increasingly studied in the last 15 years in Mato Grosso do Sul, and several records were not yet considered in reviews of South American bat distributions. Here, we present the bat species and their distributions in Mato Grosso do Sul based mainly on data compilation from literature, but also on complementary information from zoological collections, and our and colleagues' unpublished records. We found 74 species of bats within 42 genera and seven families already reported in Mato Grosso do Sul… Show more

“…With respect to medium and large-sized mammals, we made 2,635 records of 32 species, including 11 species under some category of extinction threat. With 10 species recorded, Carnivora was the most represented order within this group, half of which is endangered (Table 1) on the Barra do Moeda farm corresponds to 41,5% of all the species described for the state of Mato Grosso do Sul (Cáceres et al 2008, Fischer et al 2015, Tomas et al 2017. This species richness matches those observed at important Protected Areas in the region, such as Pantanal Matogrossense, Emas and Serra da Canastra National Parks, where 56, 85 and 59 species were respectively recorded (Schneider et al 2000, Rodrigues et al 2002, IBAMA 2003.…”

“…At least 166 species of mammals have been recorded in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, 73 of which are bats (Chiroptera), 46 are small marsupials (Didelphimorphia) or rodents (Rodentia: Cricetidae and Echimyidae) and 47 are medium or large-sized mammals (Cáceres et al 2008, Fischer et al 2015, Tomas et al 2017. Nonetheless, there are still gaps in the knowledge of the mammalian fauna in this state, especially on it´s Southern, Central, and Eastern regions (Tomas et al 2017).…”

“…Within Mato Grosso do Sul, our record is 143 km away from the closest locality recorded for this species in state. Most of the known records of D. youngi are distributed in the Pantanal biome (7 localities), with only 2 localities in the Cerrado of the Mato Grosso do Sul (Fischer et al 2015), and ours is the third record from the Cerrado of the state.…”

“…In the most recent checklist of bats from Mato Grosso do Sul, Fischer et al (2015) recorded 74 species of bats belonging to 42 genera and 7 families. However, for some subfamilies, such as Desmodontinae, occurrences were scarce or recorded from isolated localities, making it difficult to understand the distribution of bat species in Mato Grosso do Sul and in the Cerrado.…”

“…About one-quarter of the Brazilian mammal species are bats (Paglia et al 2012), currently comprising 183 known species (Nogueira et al 2014, Feijó et al 2015a, Fischer et al 2015, Moratelli & Dias 2015, Gregorin et al 2016, Rocha et al 2016. Considering that Brazil harbors one of the largest mammal diversities in the world, its bat fauna is poorly known.…”
