Medium and large-sized mammals of the Reserva Ecológica de Guapiaçú, Cachoeiras de Macacu, RJ

Abstract: Medium and large-sized terrestrial mammals develop important functions in ecosystems maintenance. However, this group is the most vulnerable to local extinctions, through habitat loss or hunting. This study inventoried the community of medium and large mammals in the Reserva Ecológica de Guapiaçú (REGUA), Cachoeiras de Macacu, RJ, providing data on species composition, richness and abundance. Species were registered through the use of camera traps, sign survey and visual encounters on pre-existing trails and r… Show more

“…It is known that the history of sampling areas and the surrounding area for the control area P06, is the pasture, therefore the ecosystems sampled were in a state of disclímax for decades, with ecological attributes: resilience, stability and elasticity, extremely reduced. Therefore, the practice of forest restoration was essential, in order to redeem the ecological functions of the ecosystem in Guapiaçu river basin (Carvalho et al, 2014). However the major Scolytinae population peaks in thesampled areas, in addition to their surge in the control area suggest that the ecosystem is still recovering its ecological attributes.…”

“…In Rio de Janeiro state, several mammal surveys found a high richness of small and medium species and the local extinction of large herbivores as Tapirus terrestris (Linnaeus, 1758), feeding guild specialists as Priodontes maximus (Kerr, 1792), Myrmecophaga tridactyla (Linnaeus, 1758) and top predators as Panthera onca (Linnaeus, 1758) (Araújo et al 2008, Modesto et al 2008a, 2008b, Delciellos et al 2012, Carvalho et al 2014, Aximoff et al 2015. As a result of these impacts many populations show low densities and changes in behavior and activity patterns (Di Bitetti et al 2008, Galetti et al 2016.…”

“…As a result of these impacts many populations show low densities and changes in behavior and activity patterns (Di Bitetti et al 2008, Galetti et al 2016. In most cases the Atlantic Forest mammal surveys are conducted with combined use of more than one sampling technique, such as camera traps surveys, interviews, linear transects and search by tracks and signs (Modesto et al 2008a, 2008b, Silva & Passamani 2009, Espartosa et al 2011, Delciellos et al 2012, Carvalho et al 2014. Most Atlantic Forest remnants are concentrated in the southeast region of Brazil, mainly in mountain hilltops of Serra do Mar.…”
