Distribution and abundance of dinoflagellates from the coastal waters of Karachi, Pakistan, northern part of the Arabian Sea

Abstract: The present study reports on seasonal and spatial variations in diversity, distribution and abundance of dinoflegellates and indicates the presence of HAB species in Pakistan waters. A total of 179 taxa, recorded in this study from offshore and near-shore waters, belong to 41 genera in 26 families and 10 orders. The high species count (149 species) was recorded from Manora Island offshore station (MI-1) and 105 spp, 109 spp and 115 spp were encountered from the Mubarak village offshore station (MV-1), Manora n… Show more

“…In terms of abundance, especially P. micans was the most abundant species in this increase. As is well known, P. micans is a red-tide species that can cause harmful effects (palytoxin, ovatoxin-a; Khokhar et al ., 2018) during its dense blooms (Tas et al ., 2016).…”

“…Variations in the abundance of dinoflagellates at each location and station were influenced by nutrient factors that entered the waters. The abundance of dinoflagellates is higher in Coastal Area than in the high seas, this is because Coastal Area get a lot of nutrient input from the mainland [6] Tropical waters are characterized by an abundance of diverse dinoflagellates. If in waters there is high diversity and abundance of dinoflagellates, it is a general indicator of pollution and eutrophic waters or waters that have very high fertility [7].…”
