Phytochemical characterization, antioxidant potential and antibacterial activity of the Croton argyrophylloides Muell. Arg. (Euphorbiaceae)

Abstract: Croton argyrophylloides Muell. Arg., from the Euphorbiaceae family, popularly known as marmeleiro prateado or sacatinga, is a plant from the Caatinga biome commonly found in Brazil’s northeastern region. The present study aimed to evaluate the antioxidant activity of the species. The phytochemical study was performed through qualitative analysis of chemical constituents and quantitative determination of the total phenol content through the Folin-Ciocalteu test. The qualitative and quantitative antioxidant test… Show more

“…Due to the side effects of chemical drugs, the use of herbs for medicinal purposes is expanding in the clinical field (Yuan et al, 2016). Continuing oxidative damage to lipids, proteins, DNA, and other molecules may contribute to cancer development (Neri et al, 2021;Thanan et al, 2015).…”

“…The antioxidant activity can be confirmed by the DPPH method and demonstrating a significant content of phenolic compounds and total flavonoid content in the species, which corroborates the activity in the plant sample. The foliar extracts had an antimicrobial effect, tested on plates that showed growth inhibition halos of 10 and 12 mm on Staphylococcus aureus [37,38].…”

“…One of the genera of Euphorbiaceae is Croton, which has about 1,200 species worldwide (Souza et al, 2020). This genus presents phenolic compounds, such as flavonoids, lignoids and protoanthocyanidins (Salatino et al, 2007), besides being abundant in several classes of alkaloids (Torres, 2008) and secondary metabolites, mainly clerodan diterpenes (Salatino et al, 2007), which are bicyclic diterpenes known for their biological activities, such as anticancer, anti-inflammatory and antioxidants (Alencar et al, 2017;Neri et al, 2021).…”
