Chemical characterization and antimicrobial activity of Campomanesia aurea against three strains of Listeria monocytogenes

Abstract: The essential oil (EO) composition of leaves of Campomanesia aurea was analyzed by GC-MS. The plant was collected in April (EOA) and October (EOO) in São Francisco de Assis/RS. The essential oils were obtained by hydrodistillation in a modified Clevenger apparatus. The yields were 4.44% in April, and 6.15%, in October. Thirty-one compounds were identified in EOA, accounting for 96.87% of the total, and twenty-eight compounds were identified in EOO, accounting for 99.46% of the total. For EOA, the major identif… Show more

“…Different plant extracts have been reported for their antimicrobial activities including some of the important appended here i.e., Aframomum melegueta (Doherty et al, 2011), aqueous and hydroalcoholic extracts of Acanthospermum australe (Loefl.) Kuntze against diarrhea-inducing bacteria (Mallmann et al, 2018), antibacterial and antiproliferative activities of the fresh leaf essential oil of Psidium guajava L. (Silva et al, 2019) and antimicrobial activity of Campomanesia aurea against three strains of Listeria monocytogenes (Pacheco et al, 2020).…”

“…In this context, in Brazil, there are several medicinal plants that are used as herbal medicines by the rural and urban populations (Dutra et al, 2016;Pio et al, 2019). A single species can produce numerous chemical compounds with diverse pharmacological activities (Mendonça et al, 2019), including antibacterial (Pandini et al, 2018;Emre et al, 2020;Pacheco et al, 2020), anti-inflammatory (Ribeiro et al, 2018;Almohawes and Alruhaimi, 2020), antioxidant (Barth et al, 2018;Pontes et al, 2019;Vale et al, 2019), wound-healing properties (Ribeiro Neto et al, 2020), antihyperglycemic effect (Silva et al, 2020), and cardiovascular activity (Moreira et al, 2019).…”

“…The predominant serovar isolated from food samples is 1/2a, even though serovar 4b is known to be the cause of the largest number of human listeriosis outbreaks (Jamali et al ., 2015 ; Pieta et al , 2018 ). L. monocytogenes can survive a wide range of environmental conditions and can form a biofilm, developing resistance to sanitisers and antimicrobial agents and therefore causing serious problems to food industries (Liu et al ., 2012 ; Liu et al ., 2013 ; Pacheco et al ., 2020 ).…”
