Abstract: Golden trumpet, Tabebuia chrysotricha, is a native tree from the Brazilian Atlantic rain forest, with a broad latitudinal distribution. In this study, we investigated the potential effects of short-term changes in micro-weather conditions on structural features, and total protein and carbohydrate content of golden trumpet leaves, using structural and histochemical approaches. Leaves were harvested in four different micro-weather conditions: 1. Afternoon, after a hot, sunny day; 2. at dawn, after a previously h… Show more

“…To minimize variability in the outcome, it was of vital importance that flowers were fresh to start with, showing no signs of stress or early senescence, e.g., folded corolla margins, and creased and wilting petals or corolla tubes that droop or separate from the stigma when turned upside down, which could all appear if the amount of sunlight or the temperature deviates from the seasonally optimal values. For this reason, the flowers were plucked at midnight, when they are turgid with water and at the circadian peak of the carbohydrate reserve content . To prevent embolism formation in the stem due to the osmotic effects of transpiration, the flowers were placed in the nanoparticle-containing DI water within minutes after plucking.…”

The first signs of senescence on fresh flowers were observed at the outer edges of the corollas, not the inner rims.…”
