Abstract: The evaluation of abiotic and biotic variables can provide information for understanding the structure and function of lotic systems. To obtain this information, measurements of 15 chemical and physical variables and of phytoplankton were conducted at two sampling stations. The present study aims to evaluate the temporal and spatial variation of planktonic diatoms in terms of abiotic variables and the trophic level of the river water and to select diatom species as descriptors of the physical and chemical cond… Show more

“…In addition, the biogeographical distribution of A. granulata and its varieties from different latitudes provide evidence for the relatively thermophilic preference of this species. Previous investigations showed that this taxon was widely distributed in tropical and subtropical regions (Kilham and Kilham, 1975;Lewis, 1978;Kilham et al, 1986;Pilskaln and Johnson, 1991;Davies et al, 2002;Wang et al, 2008Wang et al, , 2012bNardelli et al, 2016). Furthermore, many records from temperate lakes showed that their bloom periods were often concentrated in summer and autumn, when higher water temperature occurred (Reynolds, 1973;Shear et al, 1976;Reynolds and Reynolds, 1985;Poulíčková, 1993).…”

“…Station 1 (S1) is located upstream of the falls (25º39'12,8" S and 54º25'34,0" W), where the river is wider, with variable depth from 1.4 m to 3.0 m. The station was classified as oligo-mesotrophic for the sampling period, with maximum and minimum values according the Table 1 (Nardelli et al 2016).…”

“…In this region, the river is narrower, deeper (11.7 to 27.4 m), and flows faster than at Station 1. Station 2 was classified as ultra-oligotrophic to oligotrophic for the sampling period, with maximum and minimum chemical and physical values according the Table 1 (Nardelli et al 2016). …”
