Abstract: Due to the deciduous nature of dry forests (widely known as seasonally dry tropical forests) they are subject to microclimatic conditions not experienced in other forest formations. Close examinations of the theory of edge effects in dry forests are still rare and a number of questions arise in terms of this topic. In light of this situation we examined a fragment of the dry forest to respond to the following questions: (I) Are there differences in canopy cover along the edge-interior gradient during the dry s… Show more

“…Several studies have demonstrated that in seasonally dry tropical forests and savannas, the edges influence the height, density and phenology of trees (e.g. Sampaio & Scariot 2011; Porensky 2011; Vogado et al 2016), but the tree diversity seems to be unaffected (Reys et al 2013;Arruda & Eisenlohr 2016). Our results showed that in the cerrado studied, the edges favoured the species richness of the liana community.…”

“…However, most of these studies were carried out on typically savanna physiognomies. Some few studies relating the edge influence on forests ecosystems in Brazilian Cerrado have been carried out by Sampaio & Scariot (2011) and Arruda & Eisenlohr (2016), in seasonal dry forests. Like these, semideciduous forests and cerradões (woody savanna) occur in well-drained and interfluvial regions typical of the biome.…”

“…On the other hand, species that grow inside forest interiors are those that are shade-tolerant, and in general, belong to climax species that have high wood density (Swaine and Whitmore 1988). However, in some cases, characteristic differences between forest interior and forest edge are not clear (Arruda and Eisenlohr 2016).…”
