Abstract: Assess the state of public green areas, their importance and influence on environmental quality and living in urban centers is an arduous task considering the conceptual and scientific regarding quantification and data analysis methods divergence. In this study, we aimed to determine two indicators of public green areas relative to the percentage of public green areas (PPGA) and the public green areas index (PGAI) in the urban area of São Carlos, SP. The study area was organized into administrative regions (AR… Show more

“…Rysin et al (2015b) used data from forest planning, satellite imagery and Open Street Maps to assess the recreational potential of quite large areas. A similar data approach was used by Bertini et al (2016) for assessing the urban greenery and environmental quality of life in São Carlos, Brazil. Their primary data sources were satellite imagery and topographic maps.…”

“…The cloud coverage (Error) was subtracted in each image before we calculate the total of urban and green areas. After that we calculated the green area index dividing green area (m²) by population size from a specific year considering sparse and dense vegetation (BERTINI et al, 2016). Population census from the Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística are just available for few years in the last three decades, thus we considered closer years around 1984, 1993, 2005 and 2015 to get information of population size.…”

“…Remote sensing techniques consider green areas as the absorbed infrared in a single image resolution element (pixel) that is taken by a satellite sensor (MELESSE et al, 2007;WARD;JOHNSON, 2007). The green area of a city (m²) divided by its population size give us the green area index (FERNANDES et al, 2011;BERTINI et al, 2016). No formal information of this index is available for Natal or several capital cities in northeastern Brazil, resulting in a delay of data to support decisions of stakeholders about environmental issues.…”

“…Benefits derived by people from nature are called ecosystem services (Mader et al 2011). High-quality ecosystems, efficiently working, provide the basis for the sustainable development of cities because they have a positive impact on human well-being and on the quality of life in the urban environment, and in particular affect health and physical activity (Tian et al 2014;Wolch et al 2014;Hulicka 2015;Vogt et al 2015;Węziak-Białowolska 2016;Pakzad, Osmond 2016;Bertini et al 2016;Kim et al 2016;Rutt, Gulsrud 2016). Hence, the quality of the closest environment is the basic determinant of the quality of life, and the presence of natural elements can help to improve this quality (Schneider-Skalska 2010).…”
