Upgrading of indigenous chicken with exotic breed is an important way to improve their productivity for the traits of economic interest. The experiment was conducted to evaluate the productivity, profitability and adaptability of two up-graded dwarf chicken populations under smallholder farmers’ condition. A total of 72 birds of third generation (F3) of Dwarf-Fayoumi (IDC♂ × Fay♀) and Dwarf-Leghorn (IDC♂ × WLH♀) at 12 weeks of age were distributed to 12 farmers nearby three villages (Kewatkhali, Boyra, Sutiakhali) of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. Birds were reared at farmers’ house for a period of 16 weeks with same feeding and management practices. Farmers were grouped into two (6 farmers in each group) for allocating IDC♂ × Fay♀ and IDC♂ × WLH♀ upgraded genotypes. Each farmer was given six birds of same genotype. The study revealed that IDC♂× Fay♀ pullets showed earlier sexual maturity (147.50±0.76 days) and lower feed intake (74.55±0.23 g/bird/day) and thus had a better FCR (2.98±0.02) during the experimental period. The corresponding values were found 169.83±1.35 days, 76.07±0.19 g/bird/day and 3.51±0.02, in IDC♂ × WLH♀ genotype. Moreover, among the production traits considered egg mass, hen day egg production, performance efficiency index and egg feed price ratio were found higher among the IDC♂× Fay♀ pullets as 25.07±0.20 g/bird/day, 37.48±0.43%, 21.22±0.95, and 1.175±0.015, respectively. The survivability of IDC♂ × Fay♀ and IDC♂ × WLH♀ upgraded genotypes were 94.4 and 77.7%, respectively during the experimental period. Therefore, it can be concluded that the IDC♂ × Fay♀ pullets were found more productive, profitable and had better adaptability than IDC♂ × WLH♀ pullets under smallholder farmers’ management. The resultant IDC♂ × Fay♀ upgraded chicken could be utilized as mini layer under rural settings of Bangladesh. Asian J. Med. Biol. Res. 2024, 10(2), 80-88

This experiment was performed to investigate the effect of flaxseed oil and sunflower oil supplementation on the production performance, egg quality, and egg sensory characteristics in laying hens under density stress. A totaly of 144 Atak-S hens were used. The animals were assigned into 2 groups as stressed and unstressed. These were allocated into three subgroups as those who were fed with basal diet, diets containing 2% sunflower oil, and 2% flaxseed oil. Density stress was applied to those in the stress group by providing an area of 357 cm2 per hen. Egg production performance, average egg weight and egg mass, eggshell weight, eggshell thickness, eggshell strength, Haugh unit, albumen height, yolk color and sensory carateristics of the eggs were measured. Flaxseed oil reduced egg production and egg mass in those who are unstressed. On the contrary, it increased egg production and egg mass in the stressed groups. Sunflower oil was found to increase the average egg weight and egg mass in all groups. It was observed that when sunflower oil was added to the diets of the stressed chickens, the yolk color index decreased. In addition, it was determined that the eggs of the nostressed hens taste better than the stressed chickens. It was determined that flaxseed oil added to the diets increased the sensory quality of the eggs in both stressed and non-stressed groups. Therefore, incorporation of flaxseed and sunflower oil into the diets of layer hens can be recommended.

Effects of fingerroot (boesenbergia rotunda) powder on egg performance, and quality, egg yolk malondialdehyde in laying hens

This study aimed to determine the effect of fingerroot powder supplementation on the performance of laying hens, egg quality, and malondialdehyde in the egg yolk. A total of 192 Hy-Line brown laying hens aged 43 weeks were divided into four treatment groups with 48 hens in each group (8 replicates; 6 birds each). The treatments were the control (basal diet), basal diet supplemented with vitamin E at 250 mg/kg, basal diet plus 20 g fingerroot powder/kg, and basal diet plus 40 g fingerroot powder/kg. Performance parameters were analyzed in the following two experimental period: 1 to 3 week and 4 to 6 week of treatment administration. Egg quality was evaluated twice at 3 and 6 weeks after feeding. The malondialdehyde (MDA) was measured in egg yolk at 0, 7, 14, and 21 days after storage at room temperature. No significant differences were observed in egg weight, laying rate, egg mass, feed intake and feed conversion ratio among the groups during the first experimental period. In the last period 4 to 6 week of experiment, dietary inclusion of 20 g fingerroot powder improved egg weight (P < 0.05) compared with control. The performance showed that during 6 weeks of feeding, the group supplemented with 40 g fingerroot powder had a decreased feed intake, but its feed conversion ratio was improved. The low feed intake in this group did not affect the laying rate, egg weight, and egg mass. There was no significant difference in egg quality for all variables except yolk color at 3 weeks of feeding. The yolk color was significantly lower in the feed supplemented with fingerroot powder at 40 g (P < 0.05). The egg quality at 6 weeks of feeding showed that 20 g fingerroot powder group had higher albumen and shell weight (P < 0.05). The experimental diets did not affect MDA levels in fresh or stored eggs. However, MDA level was affected by storage time and increased at 21 days. In this study, vitamin E� or fingerroot powder did not show their antioxidant activity on the egg yolk. In conclusion, the addition of fingerroot powder has beneficial effects on egg weight, FCR, albumen and shell weights.
