Abstract: Objective:To perform a spatial analysis of suicide mortality and its correlation with socioeconomic indicators in Brazilian municipalities. Methods:This is an ecological study with Brazilian municipalities as a unit of analysis. Data on deaths from suicide and contextual variables were analyzed. The spatial distribution, intensity and significance of the clusters were analyzed with the global Moran index, MoranMap and local indicators of spatial association (LISA), seeking to identify patterns through geostatis… Show more

“…Despite not forming statistically significant clusters, the increase in mortality rates by suicide among the elderly over time in the northeast region was noted. Similar results were found in a study that evaluated the spatial distribution of suicide in Brazil in the general population, with clusters of high mortality rates in the south of the country, with no significant spatial autocorrelation values and no association with the socioeconomic factors analyzed 25 . Similar results were also found in a study of the spatial distribution of suicide mortality in the northeast of Brazil, which was found to be random, without the formation of clusters when associated with the socioeconomic factors analyzed 26 .…”

“…36 However, a spatial analysis study showed that suicide mortality in Brazil has a weak spatial correlation and low or no spatial relationship with socioeconomic factors. 37 Informal employment (more common in rural areas) was associated with clusters of higher SMR. The rural area has particular relevance in the context of suicide, given the significant, growing relation between suicide and pesticides.…”

“…This indicator simultaneously measures the effect of mortality and the effect of health problems that affect people's quality of life. 16 In most of the world's countries, including Brazil, 1,2,4,7,8,11,[16][17][18][19] suicide deaths affect males more, as seen in RS, although in Southern India, China, Cambodia and Vietnam, as well as in some Pacific Ocean islands, such as the Philippines, this proportion falls. 2,4,7,9,10,19,20 Lower suicide frequency among women may be attributed to lower prevalence of alcoholism, religiousness, the condition of motherhood, condescending attitudes regarding roles socially expected of the female gender, early recognition of signs of risk of depression and mental illness, greater tendency to seek help at times of crisis and greater participation in social support networks.…”

“…2,4,7 In Brazil the mean suicide mortality rate between 2010 and 2014 was 5.2 cases per 100,000 inhabitants/year. 8 In 2015 this rate increased to 6.6 2 while in 2016 it was 6.1. 9 The state of Rio Grande do Sul (RS) has historically had the highest suicide rate among the Brazilian Federative Units.…”
