Introduction: Domestic accidents are one of the main causes of death among children, characterized by an event that involves multiple determinants, emphasizing, among others, intrapersonal, interpersonal, cultural and institutional factors. Objective: To analyse the determinants of domestic accidents in early childhood.Methods: This is an exploratory, descriptive, and cross-sectional study carried out in the Emergency Hospital of Teresina city, Piauí, Brazil, between January and March 2016. The population was composed of 21 caregivers of children under five years old, hospitalized between January and March 2016. For data collection, a structured interview was conducted on aspects related to the risk factors associated with the incidence of domestic accidents involving children. A descriptive analysis was performed, with absolute and relative frequencies for the variables. The Human Research Ethics Committee approved the research with Protocol No. 1324184. Results: In relation to intrapersonal factors, pre-school children were the main victims (57.2%). For interpersonal factors, it was observed that most of participants (85.7%) considered the household unsafe for children. The evaluation of institutional factors showed that most caregivers (52.4%) had not been advised about the prevention of accidents at home. In terms of cultural factors, most participants (81%) had not heard news about domestic accidents. Conclusion: Parents and caregivers have very limited knowledge about the prevention of childhood accidents at home, with male pre-schoolers the main victims of domestic accidents.

RESUMOObjetivou-se identificar perfis de mortalidade por causas externas em crianças de um a nove anos residentes em Minas Gerais. Estudo transversal com base no Sistema de Informações sobre Mortalidade, que utilizou a técnica de análise fatorial de correspondência múltipla para avaliar a associação entre causa básica de morte, natureza da lesão e demais variáveis. As maiores taxas de mortalidade foram observadas nas mortes por acidentes de transporte, especialmente em pedestres e ocupantes de automóvel, mortes por afogamento e submersão acidentais. As características dos óbitos em crianças de um ano a quatro e de cinco a nove anos apresentaram-se bastante similares. Foram traçados perfis por meio da análise de correspondência múltipla, destacando-se a associação dos acidentes de transporte com crianças da raça branca de cinco a nove anos em municípios mais urbanizados, afogamentos em meninos de um a quatro anos em municípios menos urbanizados. A supervisão constante de pais e responsáveis, especialmente nos momentos de lazer das crianças, o uso de equipamentos de segurança nos automóveis, além de campanhas para prevenção de acidentes domésticos, são as ações sinalizadas. The epidemiology of drowning in low- and middle-income countries: a systematic review

BackgroundAccording to the World Health Organization, drowning is the 3rd leading cause of unintentional injury-related deaths worldwide, accounting for 370,000 annual deaths and 7% of all injury-related deaths. Low- and middle-income countries are the most affected, accounting for 91% of unintentional drowning deaths.MethodsThe authors performed a systematic review of literature indexed in EMBASE, PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and Traumatology journals formerly indexed in PubMed in January 2014 and again in September 2016. Abstracts were limited to human studies in English, conducted in low- and middle-income countries, and containing quantitative data on drowning epidemiology.ResultsA total of 62 articles met inclusion criteria. The majority of articles originate from Asia (56%) and Africa (26%). Risk factors for drowning included young age (<17–20 years old), male gender (75% vs. 25% female), rural environment (84% vs. 16% urban), occurring in the daytime (95% vs. 5% night time), lack of adult supervision (76% vs. 18% supervised), and limited swimming ability (86% vs. 10% with swimming ability). There was almost equal risk of drowning in a small body of water versus a large body of water (42% ponds, ditches, streams, wells; 46% lakes, rivers, sea, ocean).ConclusionDrowning is a significant cause of injury-related deaths, especially in LMICs. Young males who are unsupervised in rural areas and have limited formal swimming instruction are at greatest risk of drowning in small bodies of water around their homes. Preventative strategies include covering wells and cisterns, fencing off ditches and small ponds, establishing community daycares, providing formal swimming lessons, and increasing awareness of the risks of drowning.Electronic supplementary materialThe online version of this article (doi:10.1186/s12889-017-4239-2) contains supplementary material, which is available to authorized users.
