Objective: to evaluate the self-perceived oral health status of elderly persons and its relation to self-care practices, the use of public oral health services, denture use, dental complaints and impact on everyday activities. Method: The 95 subjects of this quantitative, analytical and cross-sectional study were from Fortaleza, a state capital in the northeast of Brazil. They were aged 60 years or over and were mentally capacitated according to the Mini-Mental State Examination. The study parameters included gender, age group, race/ethnic background, level of schooling, household income, self-care practices, use and need for dentures, dental complaints, impact on everyday activities, access to oral health services, and access to information. The outcome parameter was self-perceived oral health. To verify the association between the study parameters and the outcome parameter, prevalence ratios were calculated and submitted to the Chi-squared test, the Fisher's exact test, the Mann-Whitney test and multivariate regression analysis. Result: self-perceived oral health was described as good/excellent significantly more often by women than by men ( p=0.044). Oral health had a negative impact on everyday activities among nearly one third of the sample (n=29; 30.5%). The mean and median values of dental complaints and impact on everyday activities were significantly lower for subjects reporting good/excellent oral health than for subjects reporting poor/fair oral health. Conclusion: it is expected that these results will strengthen oral health care for elderly persons, in order to maintain their quality of life during this stage of life.

Por meio do conceito do bem-estar subjetivo a ciência tem investigado a felicidade, testando modelos teóricos, levantando evidências empíricas e apontando um caminho para o estudo científico de um fenômeno caracterizado pela subjetividade. O objetivo desse artigo é analisar crítica e comparativamente as dimensões epistemológicas e metodológicas adotadas nas pesquisas nacionais sobre o bem-estar subjetivo, assim como avaliar de que forma esse construto é conceituado e trabalhado nessas pesquisas. Para essa finalidade realizou-se uma revisão sistemática da literatura no Portal de Periódicos Capes, utilizando o descritor em língua portuguesa "bem-estar subjetivo". Observou-se o predomínio de pesquisas com abordagem quantitativa em uma construção epistemológica, prezando pela objetividade do conhecimento sobre o bem-estar subjetivo. Assim como delineamentos metodológicos marcados pela exploração nomológica das teorias e interpretação indutivo-estatística dos resultados.

This study assessed the perception of caregivers on oral health of institutionalized impaired elderly, and the care provided for them in oral hygiene and prosthetic rehabilitation. A descriptive observational study was developed with caregivers of 32 institutionalized impaired elderly, in the state of Sergipe, Brazil. Data collection was performed by interviewing the caregivers, researching records of the Institution, and by clinical examination of the oral cavity of the elderly during a period between the months of March and May, 2013. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics of absolute frequency (n) and relative frequency (%). All of the elderly presented partial (50 %) or total (50 %) tooth losses, and only 28.1 % wore removable denture. The prosthetic devices and remaining teeth of the elderly were cleaned with only toothbrush and toothpaste (100 %), with different daily frequencies among caregivers and no dentist instruction. The majority of caregivers was satisfied with the oral hygiene of the elderly (75 %) and the oral hygiene method (96.9 %) used, and showed no interest in learning new methods (81.3 %). The caregivers have an inadequate perception on oral health of the elderly population investigated, and oral hygiene care provided to the elderly is precarious.
