Introduction:The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 360 million people in the world suffer from disabling hearing loss. Purpose: Investigate the association between disabling hearing loss and clinical, sociodemographic, communicative, behavioral and health services characteristics in a population with hearing loss treated in a public healthcare center. Methods: This cross-sectional study utilized secondary data from the assessment protocol for authorizing the provision of personal sound amplification products (PSAPs) used in an auditory health service. The sample consisted of 745 patients from May 2009 to May 2013. As a variable response to incapacitating hearing loss and as explanatory variables: healthcare, communicative and behavioral aspects, sociodemographic and clinical data. Descriptive analyzes, univariate logistic regression and hierarchical logistic model were performed. Results: Hierarchical logistic model detected five explanatory variables from distinct blocks which maintained a statistically significant association with disabling hearing loss: etiology of acquired hearing loss, elementary education, previous use of PSAPs, present hearing responses without the use of PSAPs, are accompanied at the time of the evaluation. Conclusion: In the study population, individuals with congenital hearing loss, elementary school education, who previously used hearing aids, absence of hearing reactions without hearing loss, or who had an accompanying person at the time of the evaluation were more likely to present disabling hearing loss when compared to individuals without these characteristics.

Este estudo objetiva apresentar um estudo de caso que anuncia o perfil da saúde fonoaudiológica de sujeitos residentes numa Instituição de Longa Permanência para Idosos, de um município da região centro-sul do interior do Paraná, a partir da percepção dos próprios residentes. Trata-se de um relato de caso de uma pesquisa qualitativa, realizada por meio de uma entrevista semiestruturada, com 15 idosos. Ao analisar os relatos dos idosos, pode-se afirmar que o ambiente institucional favorece o isolamento. Quanto à saúde vocal, a maior parte dos idosos relatou a não-percepção de alteração na voz, com o envelhecimento. No que se refere aos aspectos auditivos, fica caracterizada a percepção que eles têm das consequências emocionais e sociais em função da perda auditiva que apresentam. A respeito da alimentação, todos mencionam alguma dificuldade vinculada à deglutição. Deste modo, assumindo a relevância de dar voz/vez aos idosos institucionalizados, esse trabalho aponta possibilidades para refletir sobre a construção do cuidado fonoaudiológico voltado a essa população, pautado na necessidade de interação/socialização do idoso institucionalizado, para que as Instituições de Longa Permanência não signifiquem apenas "depósitos de velhos".

Perception of elderly singers on the promotion of vocal health

Purpose: to check the understanding of elderly participants of a singing group on the promotion of voice health. Methods: a qualitative approach linked to Paulo Freire's research itinerary consisting of three dialectic moments: thematic investigation; encoding and decoding; critical revelation. Results: these stages were developed in four culture circles with the participation of six elderly people. The study showed three themes: (1) Expression and feelings, (2) Potentiality and difficulty, (3) Voice care. The circles brought expression of ideas and practices to voice care. The sense of belonging that the group provides could be observed, especially on emotional issues. The elderly empowered themselves to discuss their beliefs regarding voice care, clarified during culture circles, providing subsidies for a greater autonomy in their personal life. Conclusion: the dialog between the participants made the understanding possible on the role of voice, permeating aspects related to the physiology, functionality and emotion in the participants' perception.
