“…This may explain the greater frequency of envenomation affecting the extremities of the victim’s body. In the present study, the body areas most affected by the stings were the foot and the hand, totaling 76.65% of the cases, confirming the results reported by other authors 19 , 28 , 39 . However, the sting in the torso area has a risk of death 6.56 times higher than the other anatomical regions (1,848-23,300; p <0.05), showing that the anatomical region of the body affected by the sting may be an important factor for the severity and progression of the case.…”

“…This uniform monthly distribution of the cases may be related to the stable climate conditions of the studied region, which is characterized by high temperatures in all months of the year and a low rainfall index 18 . Stable climate conditions favor the activity and reproduction of scorpions, which can contribute to increase the number of cases in Northeastern Brazil 19 . On the other hand, in the South and Southeast of Brazil, the incidence of stings seems to be related to seasonal factors.…”

“…Scorpion stings show greater severity in childhood, suggesting that there is a direct relationship between venom levels in the plasma and the poisoning severity [ 34 ] by which venom would reach higher plasma concentrations in children due to their lower body mass [ 9 ]. Similar results were found in other parts of Brazil [ 35 , 36 ], Mexico [ 10 ], Colombia [ 37 ] and Argentina [ 38 ]. In this study, lethality rate among children ≤10 years was 1.3%, four times higher than in the general population, showing scorpion stings as a cause of death among children in the Brazilian Amazon.…”

“…Females in this setting might have greater exposure related to domestic activities, such as cleaning of places that often serve as shelter for scorpions, such as sinks, bathroom drains, clothing and shoes. 7 Nevertheless, other studies have pointed out higher occurrence of male scorpionism. 9 Activities performed outside the home, especially those relating to construction and agriculture, have been reported to be related to scorpion accidents.…”
