Background:Diseases of the gingival tissues are considered a global public health problem concern. These diseases show great differences in their distribution and prevalence in the different localities investigated. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of the periodontal conditions of gingival bleeding and dental calculus in Brazilian adolescents and young people, as well as to verify the associated factors.Materials and Methods:This is a cross-sectional population-based study that used secondary data from the National Oral Health Survey (SB Brazil 2010) performed by the Ministry of Health. This study assessed 7328 adolescents aged 12 years and 5445 young people aged 15–19 years. The characteristics of the periodontal conditions were obtained by the community periodontal index, which provided the outcome variables of gingival bleeding and dental calculus. The predictor variables were demographic, socioeconomic, and oral clinical data.Results:The results showed a high prevalence of gingival bleeding (32%) and dental calculus (33.1%) in the individuals assessed. In addition, as observed after adjusting to the Poisson regression model, the variables of 12 years of age, no tooth loss, fewer household residents, >6 years of education, and no need for dental treatment were considered protective factors for gingival bleeding and dental calculus.Conclusions:The variables of nonwhite skin color, certain regions of the country, and low monthly household income were considered risk factors for the outcomes. Boys presented a higher prevalence of dental calculus than girls.

O tratamento das oclusopatias em um sistema de saúde pública requer o levantamento de dados sobre as necessidades ortodônticas de uma determinada população. Dessa forma, diferentes métodos de registro foram desenvolvidos para classificar os problemas de oclusão. O objetivo neste estudo foi investigar a prevalência das oclusopatias e a necessidade normativa de tratamento ortodôntico em jovens de 12 anos de idade. Trata-se de um estudo epidemiológico transversal realizado com 461 escolares da rede de ensino público. Para a avaliação foram realizados exames clínicos utilizando a Classificação de Angle e o Índice de Estética Dentária (DAI). Observou-se que 8,89% apresentavam oclusão normal, 56,83% oclusopatia em Classe I, 24,08% em Classe II e 10.20% em Classe III. Nenhum ou necessidade de tratamento ortodôntico leve foi observado em 47,51%; o tratamento eletivo esteve presente em 20,61%, altamente desejável em 13,45% e obrigatório em 18,44% dos jovens. Dentre os resultados dos exames clínicos para diagnóstico de oclusopatias utilizando a Classificação de Angle foi observado associação com o Índice de Estética Dentária (DAI) (p <0,0001). Dos componentes do DAI, as principais anomalias dentofaciais observadas foram o apinhamento (63,56%), desalinhamento mandibular anterior (62,26%) e overjet maxilar (45,99%). A prevalência das oclusopatias e da necessidade normativa de tratamento ortodôntico foi elevada, sendo que aproximadamente 1/5 com necessidade de tratamento obrigatório. Os índices foram eficazes para a identificação das oclusopatias, entretanto por avaliarem aspectos clínicos distintos, poderiam ser utilizados concomitantemente para aprimorar o diagnóstico das oclusopatias.

Association between maloclusion and self-perception of oral aesthetics in adolescents

Aim: To evaluate the aesthetic self-perception capacity of adolescents from public schools regarding the presence of oral alterations from malocclusions. Methods: Cross-sectional and quantitative study with 374 adolescents between 16 and 18 years old, belonging to public schools in the city of Parnaíba, Piauí. The adolescents were separated by gender (male and female) and examined for malocclusions. The problem identified for each participant was recorded for later comparison of the influence of its presence with aesthetic self-perception. Then, all adolescents, including those who demonstrated normal occlusion during the clinical evaluation, answered a questionnaire containing eight questions about their perception of their own smile and its impact on their interpersonal relationships. Self-perception was also analyzed by comparing the responses of those with normal occlusion with that of malocclusion individuals. Student's t-tests were used to verify if there was a difference between the groups. Results: The most prevalent malocclusions after clinical examination were midline deviations, crowding and diastemas, and the ones that most scored in the adolescents' perception were crowding, misalignment and diastemas. Conclusion: The adolescents were able to perceive the aesthetic alterations resulting from malocclusions, being determinants of dissatisfaction when smiling. They were not ashamed to smile, did not consider that the ideal smile would improve their self-esteem and that misaligned teeth would not interfere with flirting and interpersonal relationships.
