One of the typical crops of the semiarid tropic is the maize Zea mays L., a rustic plant cultivated in the Brazilian northeastern semiarid region mainly by small farmers. It is one of the sources of protein and carbohydrates and an economic alternative for job creation, especially for rural populations. Among the factors limiting its cultivation are pests, among which weevil and Angoumois grain moth. This work aims to evaluate the insecticide activity of plant extracts obtained from medicinal plants of the Brazilian northeastern flora for the control of Angoumois grain moth and weevil under laboratory conditions. The methodology consisted in the production of plant powders, which were mixed with 99.8% alcohol, and then macerated and filtered. Using a rotary evaporator and applying a water bath, it was possible to separate the alcohol from the filtered solution, resulting in a creamy paste, which is the extract itself, later used in tests with insects. Preliminary tests were applied at the concentrations of 0% [control] to 100% ml of extracts. Extracts with a mortality rate ³50% were analyzed by bioassays and four replicates, each consisting of a lot of five insects. The experimental design was completely randomized.

Grain storage is strategic for agribusiness and therefore, it is important to consider the usefulness and benefits of its implementation. This study aims to identify the economic and financial viability of investing in grain storage structure at farm level using capital budgeting techniques. Considering the particularities of farms in the Midwest region of Brazil, the following investment valuation techniques were used: Net Present Value (NPV), Equivalent Uniform Annual Worth (EUAW), Internal Rate of Return (IRR), Modified Internal Rate of Return (MIRR), Discounted Payback (DP), Profitability Index (PI), Benefit/ Cost Ratio (B/C), Sensitivity Analysis and Monte Carlo simulation. The results of NPV and EUAW were positive. The results of IRR was 14.08% and MIRR was 11.39%, with a payback of 11.81 years, an PI of US$ 1.31 and a B/C ratio of 3.16. From the risk analysis, it can be inferred that the investment is low risk since there is a 99.97% probability of NPV being greater than zero. Therefore, grain storage is a potentially viable alternative for increasing the competitiveness and wealth of Brazilian farmers, even in the context of an emerging economy.

Objetivou-se avaliar a produtividade de grãos e de colmos, e a qualidade do caldo de cultivares de sorgo dupla aptidão, submetidas a diferentes concentrações salinas da água e lâminas de irrigação. Os fatores estudados foram arranjados em parcelas subdivididas (4x3)x3, sendo as quatro concentrações salinas (CE = 0,8; 2,4; 3,4; e 4,8 dS m-1) e as três lâminas (306, 378 e 490 mm) em fatorial nas parcelas e as três cultivares nas subdivididas (BRS 506, IPA 2502 e Ponta Negra), e delineados em blocos casualizados com quatro repetições. O experimento foi conduzido por 120 dias, e nesse período as plantas foram avaliadas quanto a produção de grãos, massa seca e fresca do colmo e ºBrix do caldo. Observou-se que a redução de 23% da lâmina considerada potencial para a cultura não prejudicou o rendimento total e de colmos das cultivares de sorgo BRS 506 e Ponta Negra. A cultivar de sorgo BRS 506 é mais sensível a salinidade, porém apresenta os maiores teores de sólidos solúveis, sendo a mais indicada para produção de etanol e açúcar. Não houve efeito significativo das lâminas de irrigação e da salinidade da água de irrigação sobre a massa de 100 grãos e produtividade de grãos das cultivares de sorgo. A cultivar IPA 2502 apresenta o pior rendimento independentemente da lâmina e da salinidade da água de irrigação.
