Thrombocytosis: A Retrospective Study of 573 Dogs (2016-2017)

Abstract: Thrombocytosis refers to the increase in number of platelets per microliter (µL) of blood. Platelet counts greater than 1,000,000/µL may be associated with clinical signs of bleeding or thrombosis. Previous studies on underlying causes of thrombocytosis have aroused the interest of researchers about its clinical importance in dogs. The objective of this study was to analyze the blood cell counts in dogs in order to define the main diseases or clinical conditions that were associated with thrombocytosis, from 2… Show more

“…This is consistent with what has been reported in people and dogs, in which gastrointestinal disease, both nonneoplastic and neoplastic, have been commonly associated with thrombocytosis. [4][5][6][7][8]13 Neoplasia was diagnosed in slightly fewer than half of cats in this study, which was a more common diagnosis in this population of cats than has been previously reported. In a previous report of 51 If diagnoses of non-neoplastic inflammatory disease were noted affecting multiple body systems, these were both noted in the table.…”

“…In people and dogs, reactive thrombocytosis is described more commonly than primary thrombocytosis. [4][5][6][7][8] This reactive increase in circulating platelets can be transient, most often seen as a rebound effect upon recovery from events such as acute blood loss or splenectomy. 5,9 Other causes for transient thrombocytosis include physiologic mobilization of platelets from the spleen or other stores.…”
