Nos últimos anos, observa-se uma verdadeira corrida mundial para a obtenção do lítio (Li), tendo em vista o consumo crescente de baterias compactas. Esse metal é extraído de pegmatitos graníticos e de salmouras, mas com o rápido esgotamento desses últimos depósitos as atenções têm se voltado para os pegmatitos. No país, os mais ricos depósitos de Li se associam a pegmatitos da Província Pegmatítica Oriental Brasileira, mais especificamente ao Distrito Pegmatítico de Araçuaí, onde seu principal mineral é o espodumênio, caracterizado por apresentar diversas variedades. Tal tipologia é associada a cinco estágios de cristalização na evolução pegmatítica. O Estágio I, primário, se forma em temperaturas mais altas (700-350°C), e constitui o principal para fins industriais. Os outros estágios, secundários, se desenvolvem entre 350-50°C; mesmo que na maior parte não possuam maior interesse para a obtenção do Li, são importantes economicamente por produzirem material para fins gemológicos e/ou peças de coleção.
