This work aimed to evaluate the physical and mechanical behavior of glued laminated timber (GLT) - glulam pieces of Hevea brasiliensis treated with chromed copper arsenate (CCA), chromed copper borate (CCB) and pyrethroid in the production of GLT. The pieces were produced using three wooden laminae with dimensions of 60 x 20 x 1200 mm, (width x thickness x length), joined with epoxy adhesive under 1.0 MPa pressure for 24h at room temperature. The rubberwood had an apparent density of 0.624 g cm-3, a value close to that of Eucalyptus grandis wood, a species traditionally used in the manufacture of GLT. Regarding the GLT parts, it was observed that the preservative treatment with CCA and CCB influenced negatively the values of the mechanical properties. For resistance modulus (MOR), a reduction of 75.44 MPa to 62.36 and 58.57 MPa was found for the parts untreated and treated with CCA and CCB, respectively. There was no statistical difference for surface treatment with pyrethroid. The photomicrographs of the glue line showed that the reduction in these values was mainly due to the penetration of preservative solutions into the wood structure (cell lumens and vessels or pores), impairing the anchoring of the adhesive.

In Brazil after 25 to 30 years of rubber production, when yield starts to drop, rubber trees are felled and destined for firewood and charcoal, despite the good mechanical properties and workability of the wood, and relatively low production costs. Wood with low starch content could be destined for the production of higher added-value products with potential to spare deforestation of many native forest species, but in rubberwood starch increases palatability by wood borers and accelerates fungal degradation, thus compromising wood durability and the quality of timber. The aim of this study is to determine whether removal of the outer part of wood or varying the season of logging would result in wood with lower starch content. We measured the content of starch using enzymatic hydrolysis, the radial distribution of starch grains by light microscopy, and the corresponding seasonal variation of starch in 25-year-old felled trees. Rubberwood had large amount of starch in its entire trunk, increasing from the inner to the outer region, before decreasing in the outermost sapwood. Starch content was lower in summer, although higher than in other timber species. After relating our data to a comprehensive bibliographic survey of starch quantification in rubberwood, we concluded that there are no technological arguments to destine the inner part of rubber tree trunks to the production of higher value products.

Resumo Esse estudo teve como objetivo avaliar o efeito do tratamento térmico na qualidade da adesão de juntas coladas de madeira de alta densidade, Corymbia citriodora e Eucalyptus pellita utilizando os adesivos resorcinol e poliuretano vegetal à base de óleo de mamona. O tratamento térmico foi realizado nas temperaturas de 160 ºC, 180 ºC e 200 °C, sendo comparadas com um lote controle. A qualidade da colagem foi avaliada através do teste de cisalhamento e análise do percentual de falha na madeira. O adesivo de poliuretano de mamona apresentou maiores valores de viscosidade e teor de sólidos, do que o resorcinol formaldeído. O Eucalyptus pellitaexibiu maiores valores de resistência ao cisalhamento que a madeira de Corymbia citriodora. O aumento da temperatura reduziu a resistência ao cisalhamento para ambas as madeiras. A razão entre a resistência da madeira colada com madeira solida, na mesma temperatura de tratamento, muitas vezes atingiu valores superiores a um, indicando a formação de um compósito adesivo-fibras, que aumenta a resistência da interface colada, especialmente para madeira de C. citriodora. De forma geral, houve uma melhor colagem da madeira de Eucalyptus pellita, com resorcinol formaldeído, e está exibiu menor degradação térmica, devido à menor perda de massa.
