The Legacy of Elinor Ostrom on Common Forests Research Assessed Through Bibliometric Analysis

Abstract: Ostrom's principles were used by several environmental researchers worldwide. Regarding governance outcomes, certain types of rules are more important than others. Community-based studies should be conducted using larger samples. Future studies should adopt ecological thinking in the structure of SES.

“…This study applies a novel approach by fusing the Institutional Analysis and Development (IAD) framework (Ostrom 2005) with a complex systems approach (e.g., Wolstenholme and Coyle 1983, Bosch et al 2007, Inam et al 2015 to generate fundamental insights into the FSC standard-setting processes in different contexts. Although the IAD framework provides a wellestablished and integrative approach for understanding complex, multi-scalar interactions within natural resource governance systems, including in forest contexts (e.g., Gibson et al 2000, Andersson et al 2014, Romanelli and Boschi 2019, it has not previously been used to analyze standard-setting processes in transnational private sustainability governance initiatives. Using the IAD framework, we undertook a systematic assessment to identify and compare multiple factors of recent national FSC standard-setting processes regarding biodiversity indicators in Canada, Sweden, and Russia.…”

“…IPLCs' surveillance over their territories is essential to preserve forest stocks and guarantee long-term management. Ensuring the legal land rights of these communities, including demarcation of territories (e.g., extractive reserves, Indigenous territories), is economically beneficial, as local communities take the best care of their own common goods using various forms of collective management (Romanelli and Boschi 2019).…”

“…Bibliometric studies have been developed as a collaborative method for the scientific understanding of different themes related to the environment and forests (Romanelli and Boschi, 2019), such as studies on agroecosystems (Liu et al, 2019), accounting of natural resources (Zhong et al, 2016), forest entrepreneurship (Mourão and Martinho, 2020), Artificial Neural Networks applied in biometrics and forest modeling (Chiarello et al, 2019), global research trends in forest carbon sequestration (Huang et al, 2020), global analysis of deforestation (Aleixandre-Benavent et al, 2018), among others.…”
