Objective: to analyze the relationship between personal characteristics and the profile of attitudes towards death among nurses in a Portuguese hospital. Method: a cross-sectional, quantitative, exploratory and descriptive study, carried out in a hospital in the North of Portugal, with 981 nurses, who answered a questionnaire composed by the scale of evaluation of the Profile of Attitudes about Death. Data collection was carried out in February and March 2018 in the services, and the findings went through descriptive and analytical statistical analysis with the aid of the SPSS software. Results: the nurses revealed to have the attitudes of approach (36.29 points), fear (27.82 points), neutrality (27.25 points), avoidance (17.48 points) and escape (15.52 points) in the face of death, and these were associated with the different socio-occupational characteristics of these professionals, including gender, marital status, age, having children, type of employment relationship, professional category, specialty, time of service, and the practice or belief of some religion. Conclusion: the profile of the nurses' attitudes towards death is influenced by their socio-professional characteristics, which points to the importance of rethinking training strategies in the academic environment, in health organizations and in services, favoring the better reception of patients and family members, but also in relieving the suffering of the professionals in the face of finitude.

Resumo OBJETIVO Identificar a concordância dos enfermeiros sobre as concepções de enfermagem com potencial para sustentar a sua prática no âmbito da morte e dos processos de morrer. MÉTODO Estudo quantitativo, exploratório e descritivo, realizado em 36 hospitais de Portugal, de julho de 2015 a março de 2016, com participação de 3451 enfermeiros. Na coleta de dados utilizou-se o questionário e na análise recorreu-se à estatística descritiva e inferencial. RESULTADOS Dentre as concepções com potencial para sustentar a prática, os enfermeiros salientam as de Virginia Henderson, Afaf Meleis e Madeleine Leininger. As variáveis que afetam o grau de concordância são: região, serviço, gênero, formação profissional e tempo de exercício profissional. CONCLUSÃO Considerando os atuais desafios, de uma prática predominantemente centrada na satisfação das necessidades, emerge a pertinência da intencionalidade da ação dos enfermeiros, no sentido de facilitar a vivência da morte e dos processos de morrer, de formas culturalmente significativas.

This article is an excerpt from a thesis that argues that nursing students select nursing interventions based on a fundamental patterns of knowledge in nursing. The objectives were: to identify and classify the predominantly personal knowledge that undergraduate students use to select nursing interventions. It is a descriptive, exploratory study with a qualitative approach, outlined by the Fundamental Patterns of Knowledge in Carper's Nursing. The chosen scenario was a nursing higher education school from a public university in Rio de Janeiro. Ten students from the sixth period participated. Data were collected through non-participatory observation and semi-structured interviews and, subsequently, submitted to content analysis. The results were categorized as follows: 'I know what I know? ’' Do I do what I know?’. It can be concluded that the patterns of personal knowledge was one of the pillars used by students to select the nursing interventions necessary to serve the person they care for.
