Biological and molecular characterization of Brazilian isolates of Zucchini yellow mosaic virus

Abstract: Zucchini yellow mosaic virus (ZYMV) causes substantial economic losses in cucurbit crops. Although ZYMV has been present in Brazil for more than 20 years, there is little information about the biological and molecular characteristics of the isolates found in the country. This study aimed to characterize the experimental hosts, pathotypes and genetic diversity of a collection of eleven Brazilian ZYMV isolates within the coat protein gene. For biological analysis, plant species from Amaranthaceae, Chenopodiaceae… Show more

“…We identified the ZYMV using ZS and ZA primer pairs designed specifically for the CP gene. ZYMV Bingol isolate was produced 837 bp fragment, which were equivalent to that of ZYMV-Ah (JF317297) and ZYMV-Ad (JF317297), which were harmony with that submitted Özer et al (2012), Spadotti et al (2015) and Topkaya and Ertunç, (2011;2013) (unpublished data) who successfully identified ZYMV by RT-PCR.…”

“…ZYMV-naturally infected pumpkin plants symptoms can range from mild to severe in density, which is mainly enclosed mosaic patterns from yellow to light green, yellowing, superficial foliar crinkle, filiformis in the young shoot, stunting, distorted fruits in squash, zucchini, muskmelon, cucumber, melon, and vegetable marrow. Such symptoms led to seriously product losses or render them unmarketable in Cucurbit crops (Spadotti et al, 2015;Blua ve Perring, 1992).…”

“…ZYMV was first reported in Italy in 1973 (Lisa et al 1981) and in France (Lecoq et al 1981). The virus is currently reported to cause disease in Africa, America, Asia, Europe, the Middle East and Oceania (Spadotti et al 2015;Bubici et al 2020). In Egypt, ZYMV is associated with significant yield losses in a wide range of cucurbit crops including cucumbers, melons, pumpkins, squashes, vegetable marrows, watermelons, and especially zucchinis.…”

“…The presence of severe mosaic and systemic necrosis presents a yellowish color in the leaves and sharp reductions in plant development (Finetti-Sialer et al, 2012). The fruits are stunted and deformed, resulting in reduced yield and making them non-marketable (Spadotti et al, 2015). ZYMV is markedly present in the producing regions of Brazil; Barbosa et al (2016), in a survey in the Vale do Rio São Francisco, obtained 44% symptomatic plants with the presence of this virus.…”
