Identification of the Er1 resistence gene and RNase S-alleles in Malus prunifolia var. ringo rootstock

Abstract: Woolly apple aphid (WAA; Eriosoma lanigerum Hausm.) is a major insect pest that has significant economic impact on apple growers worldwide. Modern breeding technologies rely on several molecular tools to help breeders select genetic determinants for traits of interest.Consequently, there is a need for specific markers linked to the genes of interest. Apple scions and rootstocks have an additional barrier to the introduction of pest resistance genes due to the presence of self-incompatibility S-RNase alleles. T… Show more

“…Three S-alleles were identified for the cultivars 21-373-58 (S 3 S 5 S 9 ) and Co-op 8 (S 3 S 7 S 19 ). Three S-alleles were also identified in other genotypes previously known as triploid (Broothaerts et al 2004, Dreesen et al 2010, Agapito-Tenfen et al 2015, and there is no more molecular information in the literature about these two cultivars that could confirm triploidy. The others were identified as diploid genotypes: 21-300-13 (S 1 S 3 ), 21-379-64 (S 3 S 19 ), 21-502-1 (S 1 S 24 ), 21-555-13 (S 3 S 19 ), Co-op 14 (S 3 S 5 ), Co-op 16 (S 3 S 5 ), D1R102T116 (S 3 S 24 ), D1R103T245 (S 3 S 24 ), and Scifresh (S 2 S 24 ) ( Table 4).…”
