Path analysis for selection of feijoa with greater pulp weight

Abstract: The objective of this paper was to identify the direct and indirect effects of feijoa fruits (Acca sellowiana) traitson pulp weight, in order to use these traits in indirect genotypes selection. Fruits of five feijoa plants were collected in Rio Grande do Sul, in the years of 2009, 2010 and 2011. Six traits were evaluated: diameter, length, total weight, pulp weight, peel thickness and number of seeds per fruit. In the path analysis, with or without ridge regression, pulp weight was considered as the basic var… Show more

“…The coefficients of determination of the models used to perform the ridge regression were higher than 0.99, thus higher than those found in the literature in path analysis studies (Cabral et al, ; Donazzolo et al, ; Melo et al, ; Reis Neto et al, ). This way, the explanatory models adopted expressed the cause‐effect relationship between the dependent and independent variables through path analysis.…”

“…The lack of coherence between partial and simple correlations is justified by the fact that simple correlation measures the linear association between two variables, while the partial correlation coefficient measures the association between two variables after controlling the effects of one or more variables (Donazzolo et al, ; Souza, Ribeiro, Scalon, & Guedes, ). However, the variables vary simultaneously, with an interrelationship between them, which makes it unsafe to use the correlations only as a parameter of choice for a certain characteristic.…”

“…For feijoa, fruit size, pulp yield, and excellent acidified taste are prime characteristics for consumption and, therefore, for genetic breeding. According to Donazzolo et al (2017), the weight and the diameter of the fruit are the main characteristics related to pulp yield. Although these characteristics are very variable among genotypes, they are the main characteristics used to differentiate individuals (Puppo et al, 2014).…”
